Did some phones actually take a SIM the size of a credit card, then?

Yes, I still have my first SIM card from Mercury one2one (which later became T-Mobile UK) in 1994.

A list of the sizes and definitions is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subscriber_identity_module#Formats

Yes,has to be micro sim,as those adapters are useless,I have 3 of em,none of em fit.

In that case, you could have a look at the Galaxy S3 mini. They're going on eBay for around £140 unlocked, probably cheaper if you can find one locked to your network.

Failing that, you can usually get a free mini SIM from the your network and keep your current number.

What network are you on? And is it PAYG or pay monthly?

roddydogs - My first phone had a credit card sized SIM!!!

The S3 Mini takes a mini-SIM, they're overpriced compared to the G and they're pants.
