Water Meter refund?

in Water bills
Hi Thames Water had been previously charging me £50 per month (I live on my own), when I queried this they stated that the costs were based on the property rateable value and not usage. I have since had a water meter installed and am only using £10 per month worth of water.
Can I claim a refund for the years of over-payment? Any tips on how to approach this? Thanks!

The simple fact is you haven't been paying too much, so there is nothing to refund.
All properties where the occupant hasn't applied for a meter have charges based on their Rateable Value(RV). The water company have no discretion in that matter as it is laid down by the Government in The Water Act.
Had you read the small print on your bill, or read countless articles in publications like MSE you would have seen that you could have applied for a meter fitted free after 1990.0 -
As Cardew says you could have had a water meter fitted in 1990 or anytime thereafter, so it was obviously your choice not to have one. Thames Water had nothing to do with that decision, it was up to you
There is loads of information extolling the virtues of water meters especially for low occupancy households and I'm sure its been noted in all the bumf that comes with your water bills. So why have you suddenly decided to have one
.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
