  • Does anyone know if the income they ask you to declare is the same as the income taken into account for child tax credits ie. after tax and pension payments ? I am thinking of increasing my husbands pension payments so that we fall into the lower income bracket. Thanks for any help.
  • I recieved my new tax credit assesment a few weeks ago and I notice that they have knocked £20 a week off from May when my son leaves school but the EMA does not start until September when he goes to college. So over the most expensive part of the year Summer Hols we will have less money
:A If I could think of a decent signature I would use one :A

£2 coin savers club £44 so far
  • the upper limit for receiving ema seems a bit low, we are just over the limit so will get nothing in september , even ten pounds would have been something. all the same my daughter is expecting thirty pounds a week as that is what most of her mates will get.i have told her that she will get twenty, if she wants more she can get a saturday job! it does annnoy me that some of her friends parents dont work, live in council houses and have newer cars and things than we do, even though we both work ( me part time). the system does seem heavily weighted against middle earners who have tried to better themselves and have to pay through the nose for everything. its a good job some people dont succumb to the "better off on benefits" ethos, it would have been so easy to become one of them after my husband was made unemployed from the airforce and literally had to start again after twelve years of service. it has taken ten years to get back to the level we are now. ok rant over now, sorry.

Tax Credit entitlement does not end until 31 Aug following their 16th bday.
If they are then continuing into Full Time Non Advanced Education, then you will need to contact them anytime upto 3months before this date to have your entitlement continue from 01 Sep.

I'm not sure, but would like to. And I think we need to do our sums carefully and quickly because I think it's income for 05-06 that will be taken into account - can anyone confirm or deny this?
Signature removed for peace of mind

Yes I totally agree, we would be just over the limit to, only because 6 months ago I increased my hours so we had more money coming in, it seems to me in this country people who get off there butts and go to work and pay taxes an NI never get any help. you just have to keep on working and plodding on...
But when you see the adverts on the tv about this Extra? help available if your child wants to got to college, they make it look so easy! as if your all going to get it, yer right.
  • Could someone please help me with some advise?
My 16 year old son will be leaving school in june and going to college in september.
We are on income support and at the moment i still get child benefit for him.
Our benefits total around £13k per year,so he will be able to get this ema payment.
My main question is will i still get child benefit or income support for him and if not can i get anything else or does he just get the ema?
Our local council has just stopped giving help with travel to college so any help i can get will really be needed.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

From April 2006, new rules will extend child benefit up age 19 where the child stays in education.

Income Support pays for children up to 19 years proving they are in full time non-advanced education (below degree/nvq 4).

Once those benefits cease, thats basically all your help gone.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

    Thanks for that.
Do you know if i have to fill in forms to continue to claim or will it just continue untill i inform them of any changes?
    Thanks again

You will get the standard forms from child benefit when the child turn 16 telling you what to do if the child decides to stay in education or not.

You need tro tell them that your child is continuing in education, you can do that using the online child beenfit form here:
    https://esd.dwp.gov.uk/dwp/InteractionMgr?interactionmgr.interaction=coc_page00.01

Just select a blank claim form and folllow the options from there
