Phoning UK from Canada while on holiday

Hi I'm going to Canada for 2 weeks holiday next month and I want to be able to phone friends and family back in the UK while I'm there. I'd like to use my mobile phone...I'm currently on contract with Orange and wondered if anyone could advise the cheapest option for me. I've looked at sites for sims and phone cards but found them all a bit confusing....HELP!!

To be honest you would be better waiting until you are in Canada and buying a phone card which allows you to use any payphone to phone home. You can get a card for around $5/$10 which will give you lots of time.

Otherwise you would be paying over £1 per minute to use your mobile.
  • Thanks for your help....I have looked at a site about phone cards but it seemed to imply that the phone card could only be used the once and any remaining time if, not used, was lost. Do you know if these phonecards can be bought easily in supermarkets etc???

Our family in Toronto buy their calling cards from Asian grocery stores because they tend to have good deals on international call cards (for people to phone the far east) and those same cards work out very cheap for calling the UK from landlines. You can use them from payphones too (without surcharge). I assume the same applies elsewhere in Canada though they have only tried within Ontario.

They tend to work for a limited time period but we're talking months rather than weeks or days and a $10 card really goes a long way.

Last time I was there you could buy them almost anywhere. Supermarkets, chemists, etc.

You use them as often as need be until the credit runs out. It was certainly not a once-use card.

    You will have no problem.
  • Thats great....thanks again for all your help.
