Tried painting the house and totally ruined the walls!

I would never paint directly onto plaster. I use a good quality lining paper, then it's easy to paint.
I seem to recall that, if you really want to paint straight onto plaster, you should use a 'mis-coat', namely dilute the paint with water for the first coat.
But I don't think you can ever get a good finish painting directly onto plaster, and lining paper is much easier and gives a level finish (even if there are minor lumps and bumps underneath the paper).0 -

We had our entire house replastered and then painted onto that. Our walls are literally perfect. You do have to prep the walls still by removing any 'nibs' of plaster (light sanding) but after that mist coat and paint as usual.
Maybe it depends on the quality of the plasterer?0
