nappy cakes are easy to make and you can 'hide' various gifts in them as well as the ones on show. just google 'nappy cakes'.

Make a nappy cake. Have a look on pinterest for inspiration. Basically it's a fancy way of giving the most practical gifts such as nappies.

Whether or not someone is struggling financially, I always think it is nice to get them something that they wouldn't necessarily spend money on themselves.

Baby clothes can be picked up cheap as anything - they are hardly going to let the baby go without clothing.

A gift of something that can be kept as a memory, a keepsake, and something they wouldn't normally be able to do is much more thoughtful, I feel.

I also got one of my other friends a sterling silver heart bracelet with her babies handprint on it, that also went down well.
I was thinking of this thread and particularly this post when I saw this earlier.

I've no association with the company, it just came up on my facebook feed. :)

There is a thread on MSE for making nappy cakes:

I would also avoid books because if friends and family are passing down clothing, chances are that they are passing down books too - I passed all my DSs books onto my brother for his twins.

You could get a memory box to put all the bits and bobs in such as the scans photos, cord clip, hospital tags, baby cards, etc. I bought one from eBay.

Alternatively you could get a baby record book - I got one from The Book People, but you can also find them on Amazon.

Get clothes. Every single time this is a winner. New babies can never have too many clothes. The baby will grow out of the newborn items fairly quickly so get them some clothes for the 6-12 months period. Having been through 3 newborns we always welcomed clothes and it was what was always asked for as well if anyone asked what we needed.

Oh I beg to differ! My newborn had so many clothes in 0-3 months, half of them didn't get worn and still have the label! I dressed him up in outfits every single day even if we didn't go anywhere..... ;)
