From memory, after measuring curtain material in metres from customers' feet and inch measurements.

    1m = 3ft 3 and 3/4inches

    1 inch = 2.54cm

    This is approximate.

Don't forget another 30cm for shrinkage........
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

The UK is not fully metric. It is not (yet) mandated that metric is the measurement for all purposes.

Indeed it isn't. There are a very small number of exceptions. The weight of people is not one of them.

And "stones" aren't used for anything, anywhere in the world other than the weight of a proportion of the people in the UK. Apart from "for your own interest", anybody who wants the information for any health or whatever purpose is just going to convert it to kg anyway. And I've never been a fan of Mathematical Chinese Whispers.

You don't hear people saying how chuffed they are because they've lost 454g a day for the last week.

I do. When I do my weekly weighing of myself I am happy that I lost 0.3kg that week.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

I work in engineering and a good knowledge of both metric and imperial units is pretty much essential.

Because the rest of the world has moved on to a better system?

I can understand the difficulty the government faces in bringing in proper units. The changeover period would be difficult for all the Brits. But every year it gets delayed, the more difficult it becomes. It should have been done decades ago.

It's embarrassing trying to explain pounds to people in other countries. It's a currency... no, it's a weight. Of course it's a weight. What else could it be? And it abbreviates to lb. Duh. Now excuse me while I go and worship the sun and accuse my portable telephone of being possessed of evil magicks.

Luckily, the old imperials didn't show up when I was doing higher maths. It was all sensible metrics. And visiting other countries is fantastic - finally, road signs in metres (by the time I've converted an "Exit - 300 Yards" sign into a real distance, it's whooshed by!), a proper weighting system (I'm 75.3kg, in case you're curious, which is suitable for my 191.9cm height), and no more trying to figure out how many ounces in a stone, inches in a foot, and other seemingly-random numbers.

Please, just let imperial units die already!!!

(Having said all that, the place I bought a few years ago was measured in pings. :rotfl: )
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

I'm 29 and I use feet and inches too? We have been looking for a house and it gets on my nerves seeing floor plans with metres. I also like to know the overall square footage of a house.

If only there were some way to convert between the two...

I'm genuinely appalled at people on here having trouble with simple conversions. None of the maths is even vaguely tricky. For some reason far too many people seem almost proud to be bad with numbers. Considering that this is a money saving site, it's profoundly depressing.

And? I presume you never actually read the link you posted? Read the bit about SI Base units and derived units.

Prefixes are easier to use verbally and written in reports than standard form.

Me too. I aimed to drop 700g per week when losing weight, and measured my total drop n KG. I also knew what that was in stone and lb, ad in fact used targets in each to measure milestones.
