NPower not billed me for 2 months?

Moved into our house in april which has duel fuel provided by npower at £117 a month. As gas meter was running very slow it got replaced so our bill in May was only 36 as we didnt get charged for gas.

Its now july and we havent been billed since and now £200 in credit.

Just called npower to ask why and they told me that its because i havent submitted any meter readings and that they try not to sens estimates anymore?! Which seems absolute rubbish to me. Are you telling me that if i never submit a reading i will never get billed, i doubt it!

The reason i want to get billed is so i have an idea of what we are paying a month so that i can look to switch, especially as npower have just moved their call centre to india.

She said if i submit a meter reading it will probably produce a bill, again i doubt that. But why would i, if im not getting billed without one.

Npower really do seem clueless and pretty terrible

Giving them a reading means there is more chance your bill will be accurate.
If you don't submit readings then eventually your meter will be read and you may face a big catch up bill.

It is quite simple to work out your own use / costs.

    Your meter readings .
Multiply the number of days by the standing charge .
Multiply the meter difference by your Kwh charges .

n'power are not the sharpest knife in the box - Being a blunt spoon is a better title

When you had your gas meter changed, the fitter should have left you a card showing the reading on the old meter as it was removed, and the reading on the new meter as it was installed.

Also, it's likely that your old meter was an "Imperial" model that delivers appx 31 Kwh of gas for each meter unit, but it will have been replaced by a "Metric"
model that only delivers appx 11 Kwh of gas per meter unit.

From posts on this site, n'power have a history not recording meter changes and/or failing to recognise the the type of meter when issueing bills
For your own protection keep a weekly record of the Gas meters readings, by photograph if possible

Being a first time buyer gives you the advantage of starting from scratch with initial meter readings, hopefully from the day you moved in.
You can then read your own meter regularly and ideally give your supplier a reading every month. If nothing else it will give you a monthy record of your consumption just in case the supplier gets it wrong (nPower are famous for it).

It will also allow you to check your bills when you get one and to be able to correct any estimates and ensure that you are paying for what you use. You can make sure your dds are not too low or too high.
Also, having a record of your consumption will enable you to monitor your usage and hopefully identify where & when you can reduce it. Once you've used it you've got to pay for it so having your own information will help you keep your bills down.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

This is only true for electricity.

For gas it's more complicated (from their website) :

multiply this number by the Calorific Value

and the Correction Factor, and then divide by

3.6 (round the answer to 1 decimal place) to give

you the total units (kWh) charged on the bill.

Calorific value and correction factor figures should be given on your bill.

It isn't materially more complicated - all that palaver boils down to a single (not a) constant. You don't need to worry about the calorific value varying - just multiply by meter units difference by 11.2 if metric or 32 if imperial.
