Anybody claiming to be able to do all that work in a couple of days is nothing short of a rogue - I'm sorry, but you may have had a hard lesson here - it's fortunate that you and dad have the ability to sort out the stuff.

If £xxx is anything more than £500 then you've been done.
Learn from it, move on and get a recommended fitter to sort out your problems.
Incidentally I would expect new sockets in a bathroom for a whirlpool/steamer to be a Part-P notifiable work. As are the new lights. Is there any extractor fitted - there should be for a complete refurb.
I'm with Andy on the ply floor unfortunately.

    Hope you get this sorted.

    Don't pay any more money.

    Hi Russ,

The electrican that came in to do the 20 amp and the lights is going to email us the Part P certificate this week. The electrician was actually really good and cant fault him.

The unit has a built in extractor fan - looked into that and spoke with the company so all good there.

The quote was £1650. The fitter didnt charge VAT so saved there,On top of that we had to pay an extra £135 to the electrican, along with an extra £55 for todays work to the fitter and £45 in parts.

Im having a google, but dont suppose anyone knows any "good practice" sites which list a minimum thickness of plywood to be used with granite tiles?

Well at least you've got the important things covered - now it's just the actual fitters work that is in question.

I dont understand why you have paid for 'extra' work when the project isn't finished/you've done the majority of it? What exactly has the fitter done? Just the plastering and tiling??

Page 14 in this clearly states how to overboard a wooden floor.

All the articles I read so far seem to suggest 12mm-18mm plywood.

I also saw this in one of the articles which certainly hasnt been done.
In bathrooms, special attention should be paid to sealing the gap between
wall and floor base using a flexible antibacterial sealant.

Be interesting to find out what the fitter used to fix the tiles to the plywood, as he only left them an hour before continuing with other work.

    Hi Russ,

Unfortualty the missus had to drop me at the train station at 6am this morning and im away with work for 10 days, so wasnt there when the fitters came back.

The missus did try to fight her corner regarding the extra money, but apparently he was having none of it so she felt she didnt have much choice other then to pay at the time,

    The fitters have:

Remove old bath, toilet and sink.
Replaced a couple of sections of floorboard
Plastered ceiling and walls (sub contractor did this)
Sort out electrics for bath and lights (sub contractor did this)
    Laid plywood and granite tiles
    Install new toilet and sink
    Tile around the sink
Sorted out the waste pipe for bath

One of the biggest parts of the job was the building and fitting the bath/shower - in which I would say I did 90% of the work.

Just to give you an update.
They came back on Tuesday and re plastered the holes in the ceiling, re-hung the door and also did a fix on the sink tiles - although there still not looking fantastic.

He sent through a break down of the quote. He said he had quoted 4 hours to build and fit the bath, however he's saying it took him 5 hours. This is laughable in itself because the very most he would have spent is 2 hours getting everthing out of the boxes! He didnt start it until at least 1530hrs and he left at 1730!

When he came back he failed to fill in the holes where the wall joins the floor. We asked him again about this and got this reply today.

Hi , I am now not prepared to come back at all for the following reasons.

When you asked for a quote you said you would take out all the equipment and tiles and get the walls ready for plastering. You did not clean the walls ready for plastering, I had no money in my quote to do this. But we did clean the walls and it took two people with steamers two hours each. AND I DID NOT COMPLAIN.

We had a delay of one and a half hours due to the wrong screws being in the pack which you purchased and is your responsibility. AND I DID NOT COMPLAIN.

Your father glued the wrong fitting on the waste pipe, he used a swept bend instead of a knuckle bend which meant we had to take up two tiles and cut up the floor to reach the pipe and put it right and then reinstate the floor and tiles. This took one hour AND I DID NOT COMPLAIN.

Attached my quotation which makes not mention of cleaning walls. So far we are down six and a half hours and I can only be pushed so far I offered to come back and seal the edges but now that offer is
    withdrawn. Kind Regards

As noted in the original quote, we offered to take the tiles off the wall.Certainly never offered to clean the walls - not being a builder I didnt even know the walls needed cleaning! This was never ever mentioned, not even when he came back to start work, so I can only assume he is using this as an excuse!

Regarding the waste pipe, he had placed it in the wrong place, at the wrong height and at the wrong angle (90 degress). To get the bath waste away we had to do a temp fix, knowing the only correct way for it to be done would be for the builder to come back and remove two of the laid tiles, and change the 90 degree pipe to a 45 degree pipe. I think he is frustrated because he would more then likely have bodged the waste and instead we made sure it had to be done correctly.

I just find it amazing that he quoted to install the bathroom, however he then charged extra even though he didnt have to carry out on the largest jobs! Weve got a plasterer in at the moment doing our landing, so going to pay him to fix the gap between the wall and the floor and add this to our claim against the builder. I think we have been fait in offering him plenty of opportunies to get it sorted.
