So I've found an accountant which seems good, he's quoted me £1,000 to do company accounts and I think £250 to file them with companies house. Are these pretty reasonable for a ltd co?

Hard to say, but if you're company is relatively small and simple and you've got good book-keeping, it looks on the high side, especially the £250 for filing to Co House which is just a click of a button these days! You'll find qualified firms who'll do the year end accounts/tax for around £500-£750 if you've got good book-keeping, reconciled and analysed.

Yes it's a very simple business, costs are pretty much fixed and revenue all comes through recurring subscriptions. I'm very comfortable with company accounts (my whole business is about analysing them) so would have no problem with good book-keeping.

I've had another quote from someone who appears to be a youngish guy that set up his own firm a few years ago, he quoted £650 for Annual accounts and £250 for HMRC accounts & submission. He also provides some software for free to do the book-keeping if I want it.

He does say he has specialism in international selling and I was impressed with his knowledge of how VAT works selling across the world when I spoke to him. Other accountants have had to 'check with the VAT expert' and get back to me, this guy knew it off the top of his head.

But then the first accounting firm has won numerous accounting awards and appears to have more experience and a bigger team behind it. Not sure if I will really need it though as my business is pretty simple.

Finding someone with experience in my kind of business has been hard, anyone else in the field will be my competitor and wont be very forthcoming. Also most are big multi-nationals who will use one of the big 4.

I suppose I can go with this independent guy for now and if I'm not satisfied just change. He said he will provide me advice on the phone at no extra charge, unless it involves substantial work.
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

If you've found someone with a specialism you may need advice on, that sounds great - any company would be able to do the bog-standard stuff. And as you say, if you're not satisfied you can change later.
