advice re changing broadband provider

i am moving house in the next month or so.

i have used aol gold (24.99 per month for around 4 years) but am thinking of changing provider when i move.

i asked aol if i could start using silver at say 14.99 per month (Due to financial reasons with moving etc) but that means i have to go onto an 18 month contract.

i will cancel aol but can't decide whether to do it before i move or after.
if i cancel do i have to get the code to change isp?

which is the best provider and cheapest?

is sky package any good ie movies/phone/broadband as i have 2 teenage daughters...

  • Try Lixxus. I've been with them for about a year. Totally trouble free. 1 month contract, pay-as-you-go. Mine is £13.99 per month for 2GB usage. If I go over 2GB usage the price is capped £17.99 no matter how much you download.

Find out what AOL's policy is about setting up BB for you at a new address before you do anything.

Normally ISPs charge you for a new connection when you move house (you cannot use a MAC to change from one line to another).

AOL may instal the BB for you at your new address without a charge, so it may be better to let them do that, then get a MAC to go elsewhere once your new adsl is up and running at your new house.

But if it turns out they make you pay for the new installation, then you may as well cancel your account prior to moving, and start again with a brand new company at your new house.

    I just checked their page:

"After 3 years of offering a Broadband service to the general public Lixxus will no longer provider any new consumer grade Broadband services.

Instead Lixxus will now concentrate entirely on it's business grade Broadband and managed services from home workers through to small, medium and corporate sized businesses, an area which has seen in excess of 240% growth in the last 12 months."

    That sucks!

i'd cancel when you move house, as you'd still normally have to wait for broadband to be switched over as well - so new house new connection

If you tell AOL to move your broadband connection, this may tie you in for another 12 months anyway

I mentioned this elsewhere - but when I was looking for a dialup ISP for a friend, I saw that Martin recommended Zaggle - and I noticed that they offer pretty much an unlimited 8mb broadband for £16.99 a month (special offer) and that there was no contract

Christ wonder what will happen to my service then? It's a shame that because they are an excellent provider.
  • The Cheapest broadband deal is currently offered by Talk Talk:

    Line rental £10.50+
Talk 2 plan £5.89 (free weekend and after 6pm calls + free calls to some foreign countries)
    Connection fee £29.99

18 month contract total works out at

    = £18.06 per month

However, they charge 3p to connect to all the other calls (so 0845, 0844, mobile numbers and normal calls between 6am and 6pm) and their prices per minute thereafter are expensive in comparison to other phone providers- (0.0285p compared with First Telecom 0.014p), like First Tele, they charge £1 to post itemised bills.

I have been with Namesco for 2 years without complaint they are currently offering just broadband at £12 a month. I can't vouch for Talk Talk as I have never had a service from them.
