I still don't see why it matters.

Your sofas could have been £2000 each last week and £3000 the week before.

If you like them and have the money to buy them at the price they are now, what difference does a sign saying that they're reduced by x% make ? If you can't spend your vouchers anywhere else, then that makes your question even more irrelevant !

X% makes £120 difference and that's on the cheapest ones. That's alot to us.

Most shops don't do this, the till systems would be bogged down by useless data. Somewhere in the company there will be a record of prices but not in the shop itself or with customer services. It's not information that's relevant to the public.

I've never known anywhere that does it either.

I understand that but why would knowing the previous prices make any difference ? The price is what it is, You can either pay it or leave it. They might put them back up to £599 again after the sale.

They could make any price up. If they've said wait for after the sale when the price MAY go down again, thats what you should do if you want the best price. However, you may find you're not the only ones waiting for the price to drop.

For me, if i see something and i think it's a good price, i buy it. If it goes down the week after, it's tough !!!! for me. It wouldn't upset me. It's life.

It's a pity there isn't a tool like http://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/ for Amazon that shows the price over time, as it is interesting to know when the price is GENUINELY reduced. So many sales are misleading these days.

On the Argos website they state when a sale price was previously lower, so perhaps M&S should do that too.

That's the whole point, they have confirmed that the items WILL be cheaper after the sale.

    No they haven't, not really.

They will have the 30% off for two sofas which will work out cheaper for you if you want two. For people who just want a single sofa it is cheaper for them to buy now.

Not everyone wants two sofas, some people may want three so it would be cheaper to buy one now and two when the current offer ends.

So put simply if you want an odd number of sofas buy one now, and the rest later. If you want an even number wait for the current sale on single sofas to end and for the 30% off two to come back on.

Or do you want to be greedy and get 30% off the lower price?

I'm assuming the OP is referring to places that take returns without a receipt but will only give the lowest price from the past 30 days (some clothes shops do this).

    This is rare though.

It works for them in their food shops (see today's results). Why wouldn't they want to try the same scams in their other departments?

Can you elaborate on the the 'scams' that they employ?
