Today I got a wake up call from the nice machine from vodafone telling me I now owe £180 . When I phoned them up it turns out most of the bill came from a 0800 number owned by HMRC. I was given the wrong tax code and when i phoned them up they put me on hold for pretty much ever, and since i only have a mobile and never knew it wasn't free im pretty much going into debt  Is there anything I can do to get out of this or will I just have to grin and bear it.I feel like I have been robbed

Unfortunately 0800 numbers have never been free on most mobile networks. The exception being giffgaff and recently Three.
Yes you will have to grin and bear it ... sorry... but a call to Vodafone MAY result in a reduction or an opportunity to pay in installments but they would be under no obligation to do so.
