Options for a low-use, fashion unconscious mobile
Hi, I (or rather, my wife) could really do with a new mobile phone as hers is on its last legs.
She has been on a PAYG contract with Orange using about £5 credit a month and anticipates continuing at about the same level. She got free texts every couple of months and used those when she could.
She would be happy to change phone numbers if that was the best option, and isn't at all interested in the make or model of phone, or whether it's a smart phone or not.
One possibility we've thought of would be to get a cheap second hand phone from ebay (even quite new phones seem to sell for only a few pounds). Then get a free sim card from Giff Gaff, put some credit on it on a PAYG basis and buy a goodie bag when she reckons she'll use a reasonable amount of calls and texts in the forthcoming month (The goodie bags seem to cost £5 and include free minutes and texts as well as some data allowance, but you have to use them within the month).
In our circumstances is this a good bet, or can anyone suggest an alternative? Many thanks for any help!

How much do you want to spend on the phone? Unless you want a smartphone, you can get a brand new one for next to nothing: http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/pay-as-you-go/deal-finder?PPAYUPG (Sort by price).
Giffgaff is good mainly for mobile data and for calls withing giffgaff only. For minutes and texts only there are better options. How much has she been using on average?
