I have an even wierder one! ???
I arrived home to find one of those little postcards to say that they (Royal Mail) had tried to deliver an item but it was too big for my letterbox. I arrived at the sorting office only to be told it was missing. I have had no apology or compensation. I do not know what was in the letter/parcel (probably a freebie!) What do you recommend I do?Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
i would suppose the card would act as proof of posting (and non-reciept as they always take them off you in the sorting office) although no value could be placed on it.
Give them an e-mail or send them a letter. If phoning press 0 or do nothing when asked to press buttons in order to get anywhere.Alex Jones0 -
Cheers! will give it a go and post the results! Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
Damn, I wish I had known about this earlier this year - I kept a record of late deliveries - several were a month late and most were several days late !To infinity and beyond!0

I sent some documents to the local tax office by recorded delivery. I checked "on line" and saw the message that they were at the sorting office awaiting collection. I phoned the tax office - they denied receiving the usual card, but went down to the sorting office anyway - the sorting office couldn't find the letter.
I complained to the Royal Mail customer services office, by letter, sending copies of the red recorded delivery proof and printout of their website page.
I got a weird reply - hardly legible with very poor spelling and punctuation, telling me it had been returned to sender (me) because it had not been collected. But the funny thing was the date - the letter said it had been returned to sender several days *before* it was posted.
It never arrived back to me, the tax office never got it, and although I wrote and telephoned to complain about their "response" to my complaint, I never heard anything again. I eventually gave up as I had better things to do!!
Since then, I regularly send things by recorded delivery to various people throughout the UK - a staggering number are not recorded as being delivered on their website or telephone service. I suspect some of these really are delivered, but the postman can't be bothered to get a signature and just posts them. I now make a complaint for each one that doesn't show as being delivered whether or not I have checked with the recipient that it arrived, and get the standard compensation every time. I am happy that I am not committing fraud - I simply point out in my complaint that there is no proof of delivery and therefore they have broken their contract - I have never said that the item has not been delivered. As far as I am concerned, if they don't do their bit, i.e. get the recipient to sign, then it is up to them to investigate whether the item was actually delivered to determine whether to pay compensation. By the way, we are looking at just paperwork, so the compensation is only the postage cost and the rec del charge as they won't pay for the paperwork on the grounds it is negligible.
I often receive items of recorded delivery post through my door, rarely get asked to sign for them.
I wonder if people really know how "useless" the recorded delivery system is?0 -
I had a video (well packaged & clearly addressed) sent to me via 1st-class mail on 6th September. It arrived on 14th September. I submitted a claim for late delivery on the Royal Mail website and received an e-mail with a reference no.
Two weeks later I'd heard nothing further so rang them. I was told since I'd submitted the claim on the internet they were unable to assist and I would need to send an e-mail. I duly did so.
Two days later and nothing - sent another e-mail.
A week later (today) and they send me a letter asking me to send them the packaging of the delayed item and to fill in a form. So I've waited over three weeks for this?? >:(
Don't get me started on the postmen they employ these days either - our post has been left in the entrance to our building (private flats), put through the wrong door (like not one letter but the whole lot) and doesn't usually arrive til midday now if at all.
Bad service after bad service after bad service...how long will they be allowed to get away with it?? >:("I am not Geoff Vadar, I'm Darth Vadar"0 -

Either, it doesn't matter.
You can also claim online, more information here:
http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/content2?catId=400144&mediaId=12600160
If you get a free Certificate of posting when sending 1st/2nd class mail and standard parcels, it should enable you to provide the additional evidence to claim the extra compensation.
i tried doing an online claim for an item of mail that went misisng in the post, but found it to be a complete waste of time.
as
A) they took ages to reply to my complaint
their reply was basically to re-write the complaint on paper and post it to them, along with proof of posting etc 0
