New rules mean you're entitled to compensation if letters or parcels are delayed in the post.
You can claim if your mail arrives three or more working days after the due delivery date, which is the next working day for first class and three working days for second class.
Claim by phone (08457 740740) and you don't need to provide any evidence - but you only get 12 first-class stamps as compensation. The rewards are greater when you claim by post:if you enclose the envelope and any other evidence, you'll receive £5 or,if the mail arrived 10 working days or more after the due date,£10.
to make a claim write to :
Royal Mail Customer Service
Freepost,Colnebank House,
30 St Peter's Street,
Colchester CO1 1HY
I have made 3 claims already and they have paid up,without question every time.I think they know they provide a poor service and can't argue with you about it.
Moderator comment:- NB As has been pointed out below please consider that claiming a delay when no such delay occured might be considered as fraud.

Just adding this handy little tip to my posting's!!
I have just arranged to receive £5.00 + 12 first class stamps for a delayed recorded delivery item.
Cheers.
I should point out it's a bit of hassle to arrange and I would only be likely to use it in extreme situations as this.0 -
Note that of course it would be illegal to claim for an item that wasn't actually delayed by the specified amount of time.
(From the top of the boards: Please don't post any illegal MoneySaving suggestions.)student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -
so where would i stand, if the royal mail reimburse me for the cost of a replacement item plus postage, when i was only claiming for a recorded delivery being over 10 days late and wasnt signed for?
the item i bought for 99p, but price is now £9.99, i never asked for the cost nor did i imply that the item was lost. the item was delivered some 12 days after posting it as a recorded delivery.
It was just posted through the recipients door without the required signaturesmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

ummm..... isn't that known as fraud?0 -

It is completely legitimate to claim if a delivery is late. It is fraud if you claim otherwise, which is all student100 pointed out. It was a perfectly legitimate caution against someone misusing your tip. To use it as "pay back" for past misservice is misuse. If used as compensation for current failures, you have provided a valuable tip.
If someone does misuse it, I really doubt student100 will be the one doing the policing.I have five stars! This doesn't mean that I know anything about any of the things I post. I could be a raving lunatic, or a brilliant genius, or just some guy on the internet. In fact, I could be all three at the same time.
If anything I say makes sense, then do it. If not, don't. Don't blame me or my stars if you do something stupid because I suggested it. I'm responsible for my own stupidity only. You are responsible for yours.
Why, I don't even have five stars anymore! Aren't you glad you aren't responsible for my stupidity?0 -
I'm going to write to them (take my chances with the post). I sent a letter recorded delivery to a town 15 miles away and it took 6 days to get there?!0

Can you claim if you are the sender or the recipient of a late letter? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Either, it doesn't matter.
You can also claim online, more information here:

If you get a free Certificate of posting when sending 1st/2nd class mail and standard parcels, it should enable you to provide the additional evidence to claim the extra compensation.0 -
But what about if the letter never arrives? I have complained about this twice: once the boys' godfather wrote, phoned a few weeks later and found I had not received his letter. Just recently I phoned the hospital to ask when I could expect to get an appointment and was told I should have been there 3 days earlier. I phoned to complain about that as well and haven't heard anything since! They just seem to ignore me!Signature removed for peace of mind0
