A couple of years ago I had to renew my children's passports. We'd booked a holiday to the US and sent them off in what with thought was plenty of time to get them back. They were fully completed checked and sent. However, 2 weeks before we were due to leave they still hadn't arrived - cue chaos, panic and several calls to the passport office who said they couldn't find the applications. We eventually paid to have them done in the 48 hour turnaround service and went on holiday. We learned our lesson and accepted the cost as being our fault for not renewing them earlier.

We came back from holiday to find a second set of passports had been delivered! After a quick phone call and a few strong words, we were refunded the cost of the 2 passports we'd got in their fast 48 hour service and they sent out the pre paid recorded delivery envelope to send the extra passports back.

I wouldn't recommend this method but they do occasionally admit when they've made an error. My passport is due up next year but I will be renewing it in January.

You can get copies from the same office you registered the birth on a same day basis with a personal visit for a fee. Perhaps that's what the poster did.

To be honest, it is not down to incompetence, it is down to the improvement of the economy meaning more people can afford to go away.

You may not want to hear it, but if anyone has been incompetent it has been you.

Of course its incompetence. Incompetent government and incompetent management
Everything they have touched in the public sector they have made a mess of.
When a service that used to take average 2 weeks, now takes 6 weeks +, it is like living in a 3rd world country.
