They may be a con and very expensive but if its the difference between my dog living and not then so be it. At the moment I'm not taking any risks, in time maybe that will change as would like to find a food both dogs can eat.

I wasn't suggesting that you shouldn't buy it for your dog. Obviously you don't want to take any chances and I wouldn't either.

I'm sure with you as their owner, your poorly pooch will be back to full health very soon :)

My German shepherd had pancreatitis and was very poorly for a while.
A dog breeder friend of the family with many years experience of GS's recommened changing her food immediately to James Wellbeloved Turkey and Rice as it was the kindest on the digestive system.
Not sure if it's the same ingredients nowadays as this was 8+ years ago.
I found if she had anything different then it would flair up.
Once a week I would treat her to a pilchard in tomato sauce mixed in with the kibble with no side effects :-).
She was very happy on the food, looked healthy, was healthy and we had no concerns with her after that.

Hope your dog is better soon x

Hope its ok to resurrect this thread. You may remember my dog was diagnosed with pancreatitis back in August. She went back to the vets this weekend as I wanted her bloods re-doing (much to my vets reluctance) but more shockingly she has put on 2kg in 4 months! Vet said it is because the Hills I/D food has less rubbish in it and therefore they retain more of the food but its causing her problems with her soft palette now. I've just been told the Hills I/D is 59% carbs so no wonder she's piling it on. Also re the treats I found a really really low fat fish treat called Johnsons Fishy Fish Chunks they are 0.2% fat.
A home is not a home ..... without a dog
  • Hello my dog is presently in hospital with Pancreatitis we were playing in the house as usual an hour later he was violently sick and on throughout the night. Wasn't drinking or eating. Took him to vets back and forth over 2 days getting tests and they thought it might be the above. Went straight to hospital and he has been in since Friday night. Has had various scans etc no blockage thank goodness and they are now going to start treating him aggressively for the pancreatitis to get him eating again. I got him from the Dogs Trust and they advised feeding him Ardengrange dry kibble which I have been doing since I got him 2 years ago. Reading the various posts it seems as if dry kibble might not be that good for them. Does anyone have any advice on this.

From what I understand dry food is harder to digest than wet food, so it puts a strain on the pancreas. I was feeding my dog a mixture of wet and dry food, but was giving the wet food as a tasty topper. Also, I was feeding him twice a day. Since doing some research, I have found that feeding him smaller meals 3 times a day and adding more wet food than dry has helped. I also keep an eye on his toilet habits and can pretty easily work out if he's eaten something that has irritated his pancreas. His treats are now limited to a Dentistick daily and some steamed chicken.

The best diet for dog with pancreatitis is a raw diet. The enzymes in raw food help digestion and reduce the strain on the pancreas. But stay away from high fat meats such as lamb and pork, stick to beef, chicken, venison, rabbit etc.
  • Morning, my first post and felt I needed to share my story.
My 5 year old basset lady has just been diagnosed with PANCREATITIS

We almost lost her Saturday gone, she went downhill so fast - started with diarrhoea followed by vomiting Fri Eve and then throughout the night
I know! Why didn't you get her to the vets I hear the cry!!,

She has been a tough cookie from early on - puppy turned teenager, developed IBD and had a year of tests to find out how best to help as she couldn't eat anything without either vomiting or diarrhoea, impossible to gain weight and allergic to all foods - and we have tried so many inc homemade/natural ones

Allergy tests showed intolerances/ allergies to so many things and not one commercial or vet approved diet worked, and after almost a year of tests, injections, operations etc it was time to make that difficult decision.
I cried as though my heart would never mend and after sleeping with a very poorly girl on a camp bed in the kitchen near the door for over a year, my,one last ditch attempt before the dreaded day, I emailed dog forums......

I met a lady and because of her, my beautiful basset girl is still with me 4 years after we met!
She taught me the art of raw diet, how to watch for triggers, elimination, good/ bad fruit and veg and appropriate supplements - she said " if this doesn't work and you don't see an improvement, I will fly to your house, stay with you and we'll fix her together"

She is a happy hound and considering everything, has been healthy, eats well, maintained weight but is prone to the odd bad day - either some diarrhoea or perhaps a little vomiting maybe once or twice a month, nothing major and with diet, I can bring her back to her normal, within a day or two - hence why I didn't go straight to the vets.
She continued to deteriorate until in a matter of hours, she couldn't weight bear and so lethargic she was unable to lift her head properly.
Straight to the vets, several bloods and confirmed diagnosis.

Somewhat upsetting and distressing for both of us - back to the kitchen camp bed so we can help each other get through this.

As we have had a really long and difficult journey already together, out comes the research need to find what will help her and at least give her the best chance - there is so much information out there that is appalling but likewise - there is some good stuff too
(I add here that she is pretty much allergic/ intolerant of many medications too, so doubly difficult)
I must say that I have found so much help on forums where pet owners have empowered me to keep going with great advice and support and they know who they are - THANK YOU 🐶

Don't give up hope, finding something that works for your pet is so rewarding. I never realised just how important their diet was and am thankful for all I have learned during the past 5 years.
Basset beauty is having an "okay" day today. She wasn't expected to make it through Saturday night xxx
  • Not sure of the %make up but a product called "Fish4dogs"
We used to feed all our dogs this and it is fab, but decided to go with raw diet 5 years ago once I discovered the benefits for a very sick basset.
This company do treats etc, bit prices but dogs absolutely love them - I make a similar fishy treat - slow baked, moderate oven, fish fillet flakes - store well and dogs really love these too
