Ignore the date, they will be ok for another year if kept in their original packaging in a cool cupboard. I put oats in my stews to thicken them.

I meant that the date is near up and suspected weevils or whatever bugs it is that appear in out of date flour might appear soon

My Mum makes these and they're lovely. We also mix oats in crumble toppings and on Macaroni cheese.

Thank you so much for posting the link to this recipe. My nan used to make them and I loved them. I had totally forgotten about them until I saw the recipe.

I just wash and float the weevils off grains should they appear. Still appear here after all these years.

I have been making 'melting moments' bicuits for well over 50 years and they are delicious and vanish before your eyes.In fact I'm making some this morning along with a chocolate cake and 5 dozen sausage rolls for a family 'do' tonight.
All of my grandchildren scoff them and I rarely buy shop-bought biscuits as these are so easy to make. I also stick a handful into mince when I am cooking it to 'bulk' it out a bit makes it go further and no one has spotted in in 52 years of cooking :):):)

My late Mum taught me how to streetch food out and growing up during rationing things like this were second nature.Oats are so versatile and are an essential in the cupboard i think. This time of the year is a good time to look for them in the reduced section as porridge is a 'winter' breakfast and the supermarkets seem to forget there are canny old women like me around to snap up the oats :):):)

These sound lovely! Is the shortening/lard essential or can it be substituted?
