Need new tyre valve caps - do they come in different sizes

Yes you are right, they undo them off the new valves and then replace them, and simply cut off the old valve with them still on.
I don't think that's right at all.
To fit a new tyre the old tyre has to be completely deflated first.
The fitter removes the valve cap, and then the inner valve core.
The old valve is cut off from the inside after the old tyre has been completely removed from the wheel.
So there are actually 4 bits of the old valve kicking around loose to be swept up.
Next time you visit a tyre fitter I'd be having a look for metal caps.0 -

Valve-cap geek again.
It's the galvanic corrosion between the brass thread of the valve and the aluminium of those coloured caps.
The reaction is caused by water on the threads and is accelerated in winter if there is any salt around.

Most times they just press the tyre off inflated to save time. This is no doubt in contravention of every H&S directive going and likely damages the wheel, but is what they do. They only deflate the tyre if the machine can't press it off inflated.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Luckily no-where around here does that, and I've been to at least 5 different places. That's madness!0 -
