Used car has died - help!
Hi,
I bought a used car from a trade seller (not a garage - just a bloke who works from home) in the middle of May, I only paid £500 as we are moving house didnt have a lot of spare cash, knew it would be a risk but the car had a years MOT on it (MOT was done the day we bought it) however this week it died, my garage has looked at it and basically there have been all sorts of problems with it and its still not starting, the cost to repair could easily reach £5-600, basically want to know what my rights are with this dealer and whether I can get money back as pretty much the car might as well be scrapped, help
Paul

What car? How old? Whats wrong with it? Explain how it "died"0

its a peaugot 306, 2000, was revving high, then lost power, garage have replaced the fuel injector as the 2nd one was leaking didnt start, so they replaced fuel pump, still not starting, it now looks like "something" has burnt out which is why its not starting so it looks like either the clutch or the flywheel but they would need to take the gearbox out to find out which (or both)0

£500 Trade Sale sold as seen ??? then no comeback .0

Can't disagree with JJ, I think your explananion says it all tbh. Bought a car from a bloke who works at home. You'll probably save money by scrapping it, and buying a car from somewhere else - at least someone with a permanent sales site.0

Where does it state Trade Sale or Sold as Seen? Does he not just mean that the guy was a trader but trading from home? And Sold As Seen doesnt hold as this goes against the sale of good act - unless it is advertised and sold as "Spares or Repairs only" - and I would say the fact he has stuck a years MOT on the car goes against this. The fact that the dealer put a full years MOT on the car states that he was selling it as drivable and therefore the car must be fit for purpose surely?0

geodark - thats exactly what I meant! It definitely wasnt "Sold as seen" because of the MOT, I am waitiing for Citzen advice to call me, but if anyone has any information they feel I should know on this it would be handy0

It's a £500 car. Move on0

Its a £500 car which when you are moving house and have no spare cash is a lot of money and when your job involves quite a bit of driving moving on isnt that easy! Thanks for your insight though....0

"Trade Sale" and "Sold as Seen" are modern day myths and not relevant put on an invoice it changes nothing.
How long had you had it ? Might be worth seeing if he can take it back. Your bought a £500 french car and it broke not a shock is it really.
Take any useful bits of the car put them on ebay, Go hire a van and use the scrap money to pay for it.0 -

Spend £5000 and you might expect it to last a bit longer. At the £500 private trader end of the market you will be very lucky if you get a decent car as they have their profit to make from that too so the car may be one they paid £100 for.geodark - thats exactly what I meant! MOT only shows that it met the MOT requirements on the day of the test. It doesn't show anything else about condition or other faults that may be present. There could be all manner of other issues and down to you to check.
Clutch failure shouldnt prevent it starting should it?Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
