Vodafone are useless! I've encountered problems with them before when my old iPhone broke as a result of a software update, vodafone quoted £144 to send the phone to the manufacture to get it repaired or replace. I took it directly to the manufacture and had it repaired free of charge!
With regards to your early upgrade, they offered me the same thing, my suggestion would be take the upgrade with a new contract. You then have I think 14days to cancel a new contract free of charge. This is what I did and then I asked for a PAC code so I could keep my number with a new carrier. This means you can cancel your contract without having to pay a cancellation fee.0 -

You can't have an early upgrade and cancel early. You either have the early upgrade or leave and potentially pay a fee for leaving before the minimum term is up. Remember an early upgrade may also lead to an extra few months being put on the new contract.
Its also worth pointing out that distance selling laws give you 14 days to return an item if unwanted, however its a right to examine, NOT a 14 day trial. Three are known for the fact if you use a phone then the DSR terms are voided.
The rules are also for new contracts, its a grey are if they apply to an upgrade as it's not a new contract, but a variation of the existing one, your existing contract s updated with a new minimum terms and yo get the new device.
Companies MAY offer the same terms as the DSR on upgrades but they don't have to in law. Some companies may also offer similar terms in store, however that's not a legal right either.0 -
