Could you not simply plug the Sky box into a DVD/HDD recorder?0

If it's built into a PVR it could be an awful interface that you get stuck with, that may not be kept up to date, and that you eventually may lose. I would repeat my advice above that a PS3 does stacks, including Netflix and Amazon (formerly LoveFilm) so you have a choice of who to subscribe to.
Buy a <freetime> recorder and another device. You can get an HDMI (or a new TV!) if you find yourself switching cables too often.0 -

You could but you would only be able to record the programme currently showing and would lose an awful lot of the functionality.0 -
This has me wondering whether you could plug a Sky box into a Freeview PVR and so be able to view/ record the different channels available on Freesat. Ours is in storage, at the moment, as we have a free Sky subscription, so I can't check if there are enough 'in' sockets.0

PVR's only record from their own internal tuners (except the original non VM TiVo) so not it would not work to record.0 -
My broadband speed is currently 4mbps but I am in the process of miving to Fibre whereby I have been told by BT that I can expect speeds of around 9mbps.
You must be miles from the cabinet! For that increase in cost, personally, I wouldn't bother. You could get Sky ADSL for £3.75 per month without TV and unlimited usage, BT unlimited fibre is £23 per month (maybe 6m discount). Both costs are plus line rental.
Sky could do you fibre for £10 per month for a year (without tv) then £20 for final 6 months of contract if you want that extra 5Mb.0
