I have been on driving courses any years ago and when driving in traffic I'm not only watching the car in front, I watch the car in front of them, this gives me more time to anticipate what might happen.

    Isn't that just common sense?

Or anticipation. It is the difference between following 6 feet behind a bus and sitting behind it at every stop, and leaving enough space to see round it and safely overtake it when it does stop. (As I know where all the bus stops are on my way to work, guess which driver is me)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

With a 30 foot gap, the maximum safe speed would be less than 17 mph
