They work on a system known as visa VAUMr_Goodkat wrote: »It doesn't matter who else you have spoken to, reporting the card lost and getting a new one will not stop the CPA. Search these forums and you will find sorry tales of people still having their accounts emptied by the likes of pay day loan companies after simply cancelling the card. A CPA is not restricted to a single debit card it is linked to the account and you have given them authority to continue to take money so they will unless
a) you tell them to stop
b) you tell your bank to stop them

Tells you all you need to know cancelling a card does not stop a recurring card payment mandate0 -
The only way to cancel a recurring card payment is with the merchant all the banks do is refund AFTER you have asked them not to honour the agreement it's a right old mess!!
Visa see it as a selling point as revenue protection for the merchant!!
It's not going away anytime soon0 -
In the circumstances I would suggest closing the account rather than messing around with the card. If the account is closed any attempt to take money on a CPA must fail.0

Just to update everyone, no further CPAs were taken from the account.0

I don't think the same rules apply for maestro debit cards. No CPAs have come out of my account after I informed the bank. Plus that is a USA link not a UK link.
Maybe Visa have different rules, never going to get a visa card then.0
