Compensation for Delayed Flight from Majorca

We booked a package deal with return flights to manchester, but due to circumstances missed the flight back to manchester. However at Palma we purchased new tickets for alternative flight and that flight in the end turned out to be a total of 19 hours delayed. We were on the plane then off, then asked to board again, then off eventually they advised technical issues and we had to stay in accomodation over night and picked up following morning to board a flight home. When I have tried to claim for compensation for this appauling delay, initially told about the 2 years bit, then I pursued this further, then I was advised I would need to claim in that country and not through the normal channels here, has anyone come cross this situation before and how would I go about this and is this correct or again am I being fobbed of - any advise would be appreciated.
