On a more serious note this may make more people put laptops etc in hold baggage with the fire risk from lithium batteries.

    New update announced this evening...

Travellers to US must have a charged mobile phone. You may be asked to switch it on and have it confiscated if you don't comply.

Sorry, on tablet and can't find a news story to link to yet. Breaking news on BBC and Sky.

So if I don't have a mobile at all, would I be in the same position as someone without a passport?

Any advice on the best kind of charged mobile 'phone to buy in order to show to security?

I wasn't convinced that the delays shown in the likes of the Daily Mail, with people queuing onto the street could be correct, indeed Manchester Airport claimed it was because so many people turned up early on Friday after the warnings and the delays would not be seen again. Having now had the pleasure of Terminal 3 on Sunday 6th at 1800, I have to warn you all that the delays are real. They were calling for people whose flights were leaving in the next one and a half hours to raise their hands and they were pulling them out of the queue. If you haven't booked yet, I strongly advise avoiding Manchester, at Heathrow on Saturday morning, the queue was the usual 5 minutes or less.

Customers on flights from the UK to the US must be able to comply if asked with the following requests:

Customers may be asked to turn on any electronic or battery powered devices such as telephones, tablets, e-books and laptops in front of security teams and/or demonstrate the item’s functionality.

If, when asked to do so, you are unable to demonstrate that your device has power you will not be allowed to fly on your planned service.

From an article in The Guardian:
Passengers using airports that offer direct flights to the US may be forced to switch on their mobile phones and other electronic devices to prove to security officials that they do not contain explosives, it was announced on Sunday.

Indeed, as unless you have security checks at the gate you can't ensure that a non-US bound passenger doesn't pass something to a US bound passenger.

Therefore at every airport terminal where there are direct US flights everyone will have to be checked, not just the US bound ones.

The question therefore is - I've just come off a long haul flight on my way to a connecting flight at Heathrow, the batteries on all of my devices are flat from airborne use and the chargers are in checked luggage - what will happen?

You'll be on a rendition flight to Gitmo quicker than you can say "just because I've got a beard, it doesn't mean that I'm guilty"
