Undercover Police Motorcyclists - Speeding?

Hey all,

So this evening, I was returning home from work, and I was going along a stretch of road that is 30mph limit but it's a flyover dual carriageway and everyone does 40/50mph (no excuses, no lies, I was speeding, too). But someone, I think which was an undercover motorcyclist, comes beside of me and looks into my car and at me. By this time, I think he's a copper so I reduce to about about 35mph and then he follows me for a few minutes along the same road, I take a left to go home and then we part. He didn't pull me or anything but he did follow me and and take a good look at me and my car. Was he taking details of the car, reg plate etc? Do police motorcyclists have speed cameras? Should I expect a fine through the door?

Any info would be appreciated?

Or was he a normal biker and did you just cut him up without noticing? Otherwise known as a SMIDSY or SMIDGAF.

Perhaps just a normal motorcyclist that you had just carved up, and was giving you the hard stare for a while. Not saying that's the case, but if it was unmarked, how do you know it was a police bike?

If you can post details of the bike, any extra equipment, and the rider's clothing, it might be a help. Police motorcyclists, even undercover as you put it, still look like police motorcyclists if you know what to look for.

Nah, I noticed he was behind me in my rear view mirror and then he very quickly caught up with me and looked at me.

It was a black bike and he definitely had a yellow, fluorescent jacket on and I noticed he had the little blue and white squares like the coppers' typical clothing on the bottom of his jacket. White helmet I think.

I'm fairly certain he was a policeman.

Check Youtube. Your reg number maybe on there.

Police bikes usually have onboard cameras.

Sorry? Are you saying the police will put video of the OP's car on Youtube?

No but lots of bikers post videos on there of car drivers that failed to spot them. Or funny ones where they spot a biker with a camera and drop phones or stop speeding etc.

Unmarked bikes always used to be black, but recently I have seen things like GSXRs in normal factory colours. The riders tend to wear black, perhaps with a hi-viz waistcoat, but are always correctly dressed with full coverage. The giveaway is that the bike will almost certainly have extra bits and bobs (radio, siren, camera, hidden lights and their associated switches etc) which are dead obvious if you know what the normal bike looks like. Also the way the bike is ridden - these guys are highly trained and even when they are getting on with it you can see the Roadcraft manual in their back pocket, so to speak.

Conversely, I have an ex-police waterproof jacket which I got on eBay. It is exactly what the police wear (blue checks and all) except for the word 'Police' on the chest. And I am not, nor ever have been, a policeman.

Jury's still out, but I would put money on it being a disgruntled biker rather than a copper. Police don't follow you and make you think they 'have your number'. If they want to speak to you, they will pull you over, not try to worry you into confessing :)

I would have expected them to gesture to watch your speed or slow down if it was the police.

Do they even have unmarked police bikes?
