Where to now?

I was with o2 and got a spectacular deal to move to Sky when they took it over. Basically everything free except the line rental for a year. A family package including some HD channels, surprisingly good broadband and a basic phone package.

Unfortunately it has just run out and I'm now looking at about £58 a month to keep going with the same package.

Moving to BT for the lot is an option but I don't see that the tv package they have offers me anything worthwhile. We can get all the channels we would use with freeview, but our aerial is a bit dodgy so I prefer satellite.

Freesat from Sky or a freesat box would save quite a bit and may be our best move, but then what about the broadband?

Stick with Sky or take a punt on BTs erratic speeds and reliability issues? I'd get some cashback and a lower cost, but would it be worth it?

I'm hoping eventually to get fibre. Our exchange was upgraded but not our cabinet as yet.

So I want to save some money, need some TV, but probably free channels would do. We would miss the sky box recording function, but could replace it with a freesat box.

Reliable Broadband is a must. Lots of wifi devices in use, including some streaming.

Any thoughts or tips are welcome!

I'm going to cancel the tv, as I watch very little other than Freeview channels and we have two Humax PVRs anyway.

As tv was first to be set up, it will be cancelled first, giving a few days to consider broadband and phone options, should they make an offer. It appears that people cancelling tv have been given broadband /phone deals.

The wiring is the same from teh exchange to the house so in theory the speeds available should be the same between all the providers.

I moved from O2 to plusnet. No chance was i moving to SKY.

Sky has more channels than any other provider, it depends whether you watch any of the ones that are exclusive to them.
Sky Atlantic comes to mind, but you could probably get most of the content via Netflix and a Google Chromecast or similar.

BT don't have any more reliability issues or speed erratic-ism than any other provider - you could argue they have less because they own all of the infrastructure.

Whoever you go with, providing it's either FTTC or normal ADSL you'll be on BT equipment anyway.

Not correct, LLU providers have their own equipment and fibre network independent of BT.
BT do still own the final mile from exchange to the subscriber.
.......and BT open reach maintain it.

You got the Family pack free for 12 months, you will get put onto the same pack at half price for 12 months. This will make the same package £39.40 for the next 12 months.

Cancellations can further discount this to £31.70 if you want to keep all the same. Or you could downgrade to the Original package which would be £25.90 with the cancellations additional offer.

If you'd like some Sky Sports then you could potentially get Sports 1 & 5 so you get the free broadband offer and this would be £31.20 with Family or £25.45 with Original if the retentions advisor was willing to go that far.

Or you could get a deal on standalone broadband and phone without tv.

TV is of more interest to other people in the house, but broadband is an interest of mine. This is certainly not the case. Contention in the evenings in particular still exists and all providers are far from the same. That's why I was with o2.

Sky has been surprisingly good for the past year and our usage has gone up and up. Mainly with other people using on-demand tv services.

Great stuff thanks. £39.40 is exactly where I am at now. I was charged £54 last month and phoned up to cancel TV after I posted here.

I was told that half-price had been added automatically though a bit late for my bill. So my next bill will be £22 with £39.40 from then on. I said I would leave it at the moment and call back after consulting the rest of my family.

Well of course it doesn't apply to LLU - that's a totally different kettle of fish. I was referring to BT Wholesale providers - I should have made this clear. :)
