  • VW Up is a cracking motor, albeit on the small size, but it all depends on your requirements, I guess.

Take a look at the Seat and Skoda equivalents to the Up as you may well get more for your buck, specification wise. Engines are all the same VW ones, AFAIK.

    Good luck and happy hunting!

I thought it might be a little on the small size but I've not seen one close up so worth going for a look.

I'm not too bothered by the depreciation, I don't think I'm likely to change cars very often.

Had been quite taken by the Seat Ibiza and was going to arrange a test drive for saturday (boucher road... oh dear). Quite like what you get for your money with the VW Up! as well though.

All that being said of course I'm planning to spend most of saturday morning trailing around the dealers looking through the lots anyway.

Speaking of Ibizas, my dad just got a brand new 1.4 Ibiza Toca from Roadside in Portadown, discounted down to £9995 on the road.

He also looked at the same car with SERE motors, who were doing the car for £10,495 BUT were doing interest free credit for five years at that price.

I know my dad looked at 3 year old ones and they were coming in around £7,000 anyway, so he went for new instead.

    Might be worth considering?

Finance isn't going to happen but was looking at new Seats for sure. Had a wander around CH usedirect last night and saw some nice Fords (focus/fiesta) and a Seat Leon that seemed in good shape.

Was quite taken by the Focus even if it looked a little big. Wouldn't buy a new ford though, pretty expensive.

Will check out those guys in portadown cheers.

We changed our motor last year and saved well over £1300 by buying from Evans Halshaw near Glasgow. Cost me £28 for a flight over and about £100 to bring it back on the ferry. We did a lot of research and decided first on the make and model we wanted then searched the UK for one.
The same model ( Mondeo business edition ) was around £1500 more expensive from local dealers and Evans sales people were very professional, even picked me up at the airport in the Mondeo to let me drive it back to the showroom for a test drive.

    Sorry, I skimmed the post.

AC would possibly be cheapest on mainland, but you'll need to factor registration hassles with internal movement within the UK.

    CK

Although I believe that's to get a lot simpler now that the DVLA in Swansea have taken over vehicle licensing in NI.

I did similar for my FIL a couple of years ago. He wanted a Renault Modus and for what local dealers were looking for a 2 year old one with 30K miles, we got a six month old one with 6K miles, from Lookers in Bootle(?). We simply transferred the money over and we had Woodside Haulage bring the car over for us (I think it was £180). Of interest Lookers own Charles Hurst group, so any issues you can take it to Hursts.

    Minor (but boring) point:

If you only passed your test last friday, would you not be better looking at model insurance quotes first?

Little point buying a 6k car that costs 3k to insure :)

I take it this deal was an online one? Did you see/drive the car beforehand?

On the subject of mainland car supermarkets, has anyone dealt with Cargiant?

Spent most of the day mooching around car dealers but came to the conclusion that I wasn't particularly convinced about buying second hand. Ended up where I had anticipated being some time ago when I started thinking about driving, in a Kia dealership. Very keen on a new Kia Rio so will phone round the other 2 dealers on monday and see if they can match internet prices etc.

I had been and more or less for any 'non sporty' hatchback I am getting gocompare quotes for around the £750 mark. Should be able to drop that down a bit by phoning round and I'm happy enough with that.

Also received my provisional and test cert back from the DVLA today telling me I needed to pay £30 despite being told last week I didn't need to :D Expensive business this driving lark :o
