Avoiding anything to do with Renault would be my recommendation.

I would have to second that! Best bet is ask in the test centre what make and model rarely fails MOT. Last time I asked, the answer was 'Anything Japanese, especially Toyota. Also Ford Focus' I acted on that, have had Proton (yes, they're Malasyian, I know), Mitsubishi and Suzuki and have been more than happy with them. That said, my son has a Corsa and it has been pretty good. It's not so much choosing what is best, it's avoiding the rubbish.

Nothing is perfect! At least Toyata will admit to failings and recall and rectify. Contrast that to others who just deny faults. Clio bonnet catches anyone?

I guy I used to work with had his VW jeep blow up on him.

VW said it was starved of oil, 4 weeks after a service and oil change.

He did a bit of research and found out it’s a “common” enough problem but still VW wanted nothing to do with it. Took 4 months to get the engine replaced free of charge.

It happens with all car makers.

Not perfect but, more importantly, not reliable. Who wants all the additional hassle because Toyota cannot make their cars properly in the first place. Over 25 million recalls in the past two and a half years........faulty airbags, seat rails and previously brake problems. The brand is seriously damaged and to be avoided, in my opinion. Check out the JD Power 2014 survey - the VW group has no less than SIX cars in the top 10 which is an excellent barometer to a car's quality and reliability based on customer satisfaction surveys.

Before doing that read up on the depreciation of any car in its first year,it will certainly give you pause for thought.

I'm not too bothered by the depreciation, I don't think I'm likely to change cars very often.

Had been quite taken by the Seat Ibiza and was going to arrange a test drive for saturday (boucher road... oh dear). Quite like what you get for your money with the VW Up! as well though.

All that being said of course I'm planning to spend most of saturday morning trailing around the dealers looking through the lots anyway.
