Toxic fake toothpaste that could have serious health consequences for anyone using it has been sold in markets and discount shops in the UK, the British medicines regulator has said
The imitation tubes of Sensodyne have both Arabic and English writing on them.
The manufacturer of the legitimate product, GlaxoSmithKline, has said the fake toothpaste has high levels of the chemical Diethylene Glycol.
The chemical could be toxic to young children and anyone with impaired liver or kidney function.
In a statement the company said the fakes were illegal copies and had no connection with GlaxoSmithKline.
It said legitimate Sensodyne, labelled only in English and sourced from authorised suppliers is not defective and the public can continue to purchase and use these products with confidence.
Anyone with one of the fake packs is advised to dispose of it immediately.
The Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce believes that the trade in fake goods including medicines and drugs is increasing dramatically.
The ICC estimates counterfeiting costs companies more than £300m a year, although others argue that figure is much too low

There have been similar problems in the USA with (I think) fake Colgate amongst the products found to contain toxic substances. :eek:0

Why do they have arabic written on them? Is that where they are made?0

Sometimes goods are produced for export.
You sometimes get Coca Cola and chocolate in Home Bargains with the writing in Arabic.0 -
of course the sensodyne could be legitimate product from the mid east. yes it might be fake then of course it might be price protection for the UK market.
you will find if you care to enquire that legitimate sensodyne is sold at almost one third the price it is in the UK in some other countries including those in the mid east.
and of course the writing on them had to be arabic didnt it ...0 -
I often find coke in my local Spar with arabic on the can. So maybe the shops just sell what they are given.0

The makers say that it is a fake, not one of their products made for sale overseas.0

This is even showing as true on the snopes site:

Slightly off topic our local pizza place sells foreign branded coca cola that tastes exactly like those old brown sugar and carbonated mixes you used to get in really cheap bars a few years back. It actually makes you feel icky (good technical term that!) when you drink it..so we don't.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. yes but surely not all of the sensodyne with arabic on will be fakes ? clearly some sensodyne with arabic will be genuine and legitimate and imported into the uk market precisely because there is such a great price difference. as for believing in what corps and govt have to say when it hits their bottom line well thats another story ..0 -

I think the problem is that different countries ban certain chemicals, so what is for instance banned as dangerous in the UK is perhaps allowed overseas. many potentially carcinogenic products are not licensed for use in the UK, but as they are cheap they are often added to products sold overseas where restrictions do not apply. That's basically what the snopes story is suggesting.
Conversely I must stick to gluten free food and it is very confusing that some products when manufactured overseas (like Pringles) might be gluten free but when they are manufacturered in the UK factory that same flavour will contain gluten. They are completely different products, but in the same can and sold alongside each other in the supermarket.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I do use Sensodyne but will probably continue to buy from a "reputable" source as this fake stuff, going by the picture, would appear to turn the user rabid.:D0
