i bought a car from a local main dealer in 2012 and had an MOT last year , it passed everything apart from a bulb and wiper and the emmissions

i was told it had to have a diesel cleaner run through it and it will pass , i didnt query it but was charged an additional £21.74

i had this years MOT yesterday and passed but again failed on the emmissions so was told the same thing

i managed to catch site of the product they were using so checked it out at my local motorworld and its £4.99 and says add 1/4 of a bottle to a 50l tank

i havent gone back to query the garage , i am sure though they added a small amount and kept the rest but charged me for a full bottle

do you think i have been scammed

No. You have been subjected to margin inflation, but that's not a crime. If it were, every time you paid a couple of quid for a 50p burger in McDonald's someone would be arrested.

There's a reason they're known as 'main stealers'.

Maybe put in in yourself before next years test. If they charged for a full bottle go and ask them for it.

    MOT test fee £54.85

    You paid £39 + £21.74 = £60.74 minus £5 for bottle of cleaner = £55.74

Seems about right to me. Unless you thought a garage can charge less for MOTs and still make a profit.

A garage can charge what they want for an MOT as long as it isnt over £54.85.

Why not save yourself the money and take the car for a good blast before the MOT to clear it out so that it doesn't fail the smoke test.

If they really wanted to scam you, they could have charged you for a retest as well.

    Not legally they couldn't.
As the car wasn't taken away from the garage, a retest is free.
