Which stove....

Hi,

We are looking to put in a new multifuel dry stove in our property which we provide the majority of the heating. We currently have a stratford boiler stove, which is shockingly rubbish, although think that's down to the install not the stove!!

Our installer recommended the Clearview range and I have read nothing but positive reviews about the Clearview Pioneer 400. However I was always set on a Charnwood Island 1.

Can anyone provide any advice on which would be better to purchase in terms of heat output, performance and consumption?

Many thanks

I should point out that the reason my heart was set on the Charnwood Island 1 is it has a larger heat range i.e from 2kw to 7kw yet still retaining it's 5kw nominal output. My worry with the Clearview is that the range is smaller from 1kw to 5kw but i'm not sure if this is irrelevant if the Clearview stove is better all round....

    Thanks again in anticipation
  • Both good stoves, does it have to be multi fuel ? I prefer wood and would recommend a Burley Holleywell 5KW its 4-6.5KW in reality, replaced an old stovax last year with it and very pleased, only niggle is the air swirl inside whips fly ash up onto the glass.
If a stainless liner is being used and you intend to use smokeless fuel get them to fit a good quality 904 grade liner.

Hi Chimneysweep, thanks for your reply. My partner really wanted wood only but as we do not have an unlimited supply of free wood thought it would be sensible to have a multi-fuel to have the option. Had a discussion again with OH last night and think we're going to do with our gut on this and purchase a Charnwood Island 1. You can't dispute the build quality on these and they feel very robust compared to other makes and models we've seen, and we've seen a lot!!
  • Good choice sweep a couple and both are happy with them, do go for the 904 liner worth the extra cost at the begining, I only install 904 on any job regardless of fuel use and will now only use scheidel products not the cheapest but worth the bit extra, even my own wood burner has a 904.

Thanks for the reply yes I believbe we're going to get a very high spec flue installed as our installer is only happy on doing so!

Still slightly concerned about choice of stove though, can't seem to find a bad review about the Clearview Pioneer 400 which is doubting my decision! All the reviews for which state they are very powerful for a small stove and heat a larger than thought space, ahhhh!!

Just concerned to achieve a higher output on the Charnwood will have to load high to achieve the heat whereas the Clearview (as a smaller fire box) would be easier to sustain the 5kw of heat required.

    Any further thoughts?

They are, undoubtedly, both good brands. There is a bit of post-purchase justification and brand snobbery involved in the Clearview mystique, though. People who pay top whack for a product (over the odds, some might say) are very unlikely to admit they made a mistake.

It's hard to believe you would go wrong with either, so if you like the Charnwood, I'd say buy it. I certainly would - the ones I've encountered have been great stoves and had they made one large enough when I bought my last stove, that's what I would have bought.

Many thanks for your reply A. Badger. It's such a hard decision as only want to do it once! Both are about the same price tag, just a struggle to know which to go for. As you say think there is a bit of biased opinion from Clearview owners and not very many reviews on our choice of Charnwood. Think in the end it will probably come down to aesthetics. Thanks again for all your replies.

Thanks ktee_uk. We did look at the Town and Country but were put off by the amount of controls, we wanted something simple and easy to control.

We've finally decided on a Clearview Pioneer 400p in Slate Blue!

Order is going in next week :)
