Never lock valuables in your suitcase even while travelling. There is a youtube clip where they open your case using a biro pen between the zip teeth. They can empty your case and redo the case using the zip without you knowing.

I went on a weeks holiday to spain a few weeks ago. I didnt use a safe, I had my iphone with me most of the time and my passport in a drawer in the room. I didnt have tons of money with me as I was all inclusive

I didnt use a safe last year either when I was in Spain and I had no problems.

Many hotels will charge you to use them. I only take hand luggage even if Im going for a week, havent used a suitcase lock in a while either, its always with me or in the overhead locker, never had any problems.

We always use a safe when we go to Spain. Have never in all the years of travelling there had a problem. We've never had a code though, it's always a key we are given. They are always big enough for us also.

Don't see the point of putting a lock on the case in the apartment though. You do know they can just take the case with them and open it up later.
We do put locks on our cases when travelling now though due to having our cases rummaged through one year, they were majorly disappointed as there was nothing but clothes in them lol. It's still the same, however for my own piece of mind the locks go on them.

I was not going to lock the suitcase on the flight as have valuables in hand luggage!

So what were you going to do with the lock?

Surely not lock the case indicating that there might be something valuable inside when all someone has to do it pick up the case and walk away with it?

I've never come across a hotel safe that takes less than A4 size. But i don't think they're any safer than the bottom of your knicker drawer. They have to be easily opened otherwise people forgetting the code/losing the key would never get their valuables back.

I've found that only certain members of staff can open them. I'm not sure how I manage it but I often seem to get my stuff trapped in them and have to call someone to unlock it for me. It's annoying as you then have to wait for the safe unlocker to come as decent hotels insist you're there when they open it.

I once got my passport trapped as I was about to leave for the airport and that was a complete pain as only a certain manager had the unlock code and it took her ages to come. I've also locked them with nothing in while testing them and had to call and get it fixed. People like me shouldn't be allowed to touch them.

I suppose that's reasonable. You wouldn't want all staff to have the master code.
