How curious is he? I bought this for my boys 5th birthday - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Snap-Circuits-SC-100-Jr/dp/B00008BFZH/ref=pd_cp_k_h_b_cs_0
He loves it as he's very inquisitive. Not quite able to do it all himself, but he'll get there. I'm sure a 7 year old would have more luck doing it themselves.0 -
My son loves the Bat Cave. Essentially a dolls house for boys!

I was reluctant at first, but it has had so much use, he is now 100 -
Can you ring your relative and ask to speak to him on the phone, and ask him what he wants? When my sister was around this age, my Dad and Stepmum bought her loads for Christmas (DS, bike etc). A few days before they actually asked her what she wanted - she said a ball in a cup! They ended up making her a ball in a cup game, and that's all she played with all Christmas...0

My LO loves lego but if that's not an option then how about some toys / games for the garden.
Or you could arrange a trip to take him out for lunch and then let him choose his present from a toy shop while out.0 -

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I've just ordered this. Just the sort of thinking outside the box present I wanted to get him. And the reviews on Amazon are really good. He won't have anything like it already. Just hope I receive it before I see him.0 -
No problemo, my little boy requires out of the box thinking
The nice thing is that it's expandable with other kits. You might want to send a few AA batteries to go with it

A great gift for a child of that age is a magnifying glass - a proper big X 10 one. It opens up a whole new world to them!0
