Present for 7 year old boy

Hello. I'm hoping people on here can give me some ideas for a birthday present for a 7 year old boy and maybe tell me of successful toys/games that you've bought. It's my nephews birthday in just over a week and I haven't got a clue what to get him. Asked his mum and she wasn't able to give me any ideas. Tried randomly looking through toys on Amazon but wasn't struck by anything.
Budget approx. £25-£30, anything just over or cheaper is fine, if it's cheap can buy a couple of things.
Please people of MSE help me! Not a fan of giving vouchers or cash as would rather buy him something I think he'd like.
It was so much easier when he was younger as he was into Thomas the Tank Engine and any trains for years.

    or Lego
or go into the nearest toy shop and ask them what is popular at the moment.

But each child's interests will be different but you may stumble across something he didn't know he liked, because he has been stereotyped into what people think he likes based on his previous wish lists.

Thanks but he already has a fair bit of lego and wouldn't want to get something he has. Plus he will ask for and get lego and then get his older brother to build it for him :rotfl:

Why don't you ask his older brother for ideas...then you will get something that is wanted (even if not quite wanted by the 7 year old, lol).
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

I love the book people and most of his Christmas presents were from there, so maybe not books this time. But will have a look to see if anything looks really good :)

I agree with not stereotyping and would like to discover something he didn't know he'd like. My nephews can be very much "into" things and the present ideas given are often to do with what they're into at the time. I bought him a playdoh hamburger set a few years ago and it was a surprise hit as he didn't like playdoh until I bought him that. He played with it every day for ages :D.

My mind is completely blank at the moment

Thank you everyone for suggestions so far. I'm not being negative about suggestions. It's just that these boys do have a lot of stuff, a lot of family and when they're into something they will probably get everything to do with that for birthdays and Christmas. I know he likes Marvel at the moment, but scared to buy him anything Marvel related as he will probably already have it. So trying to think outside the box. They live in a different town so might not see him until after his birthday (depends which weekend they visit) Sort of hoping it's the weekend after as more time to get present :o

Last time I went toy shopping with my 7 year old son, he chose a castle like this, which cost about £15:

He's now collecting knights and horses to go with it, they're about £6 each. He's made a second castle out of packaging, so he's got a red castle and a blue castle with knights of appropriate colours in each.
