I find an old crochet hook does the job of clearing haiors from plug holes really well and you don't need much space to fit it through.0

Do you have easy access to underneath the basin?
Empty the basin, spread newspapers or old towels etc around to soak up any water and carefully remove the waste trap. Keep it as level as possible as it is full of water. Have a bucket or other container handy and drain the trap into it.
Note how it is all assembled before removing it.
Take the trap apart and carefully remove all the horrible gunge that you will probably find with a suitable tool (an old toothbrush is ideal) and dispose of in your bin and wash the trap out in another basin or sink or under the outside garden tap.
Don't make the classic mistake of washing it out in the basin that it serves as you will have a flood. Don't let anyone open a tap while the trap is removed.
Clean out any gunge that you can find in the plughole looking from underneath.
Reassemble carefully making sure that all the washers etc are in place and the pipes are fully inserted into the trap and check for leaks. As you remove and disassemble the trap remember or write down where the washers are, which way up things are etc.
I do that every year or so for the basin that Mrs A uses to wash her hair in.
It is a ten to fifteen minute job.0 -
I have a plug like this and my Mum recently cleaned it out for me
She used a tool which is a bit like a mascara brush but on a flexible wire. It can be pushed through the gap, the brush collects the hairs and pulls them out. There seem to be various versions of this if you search for "plughole cleaner."
