No driving License - Offered fantastic job in Burton on Trent

Hi,

First time poster,

Bit of a dilemma, been working on a minimum wage job last few years, and only got a slight pay rise last few months, last week I was offered a job In Burton on trent paying £25,000 a year, obviously really happy!!

However the commute on public transport from Nottingham, seems like a nightmare, and also have not got my driving license just as yet.

Anyone get any ideas, idea is to commute first few months, while I am learning to drive.

Move into a house share, lodge with someone Monday to Friday?
  • Suppose that is an option that I will have to consider, is there anyone on here who travel daily from burton on Trent to Nottingham and vice versa on public transport?
  • Car share websites? the online way to hitch a lift! ;)

Train doesn't seem to be too bad with 50 minutes - that's obviously if you're relatively close to both stations. I'm doing an hour door to door but have done much more in the past, when I went to uni my commute was around 2 - 2.5 hours each way (walk - bus - train - train - train - walk). I've also done an hour on the bus + 10 minutes walk for my first job as well as an hour by train when I got offered my second job but moved closer after a couple of months.

Cost is obviously a different issue - I tend to get a yearly season ticket on an interest-free credit card and then pay that off over the interest free period. Some employers offer loans which are the better option if available.

Train time is not to bad, however on occasions will be starting at 6am, so need a train for 5am, and on occasions will finish at 10, so need a train after 10.

I live next to burton station and commute burton to stoke everyday and I often catch the Nottingham train to see my family. It's not a bad commute as it's direct and the station is very close to the town centre. What is the company if you don't mind me asking?

Prefer not to say, I hear what you are saying, and the company is not to far from Burton Train station, however first train to Burton from Notts is at 6am, so I am !!!!!!ed for a 6am start, only options I can see is a houseshare, or try to negotiate a day shift which would be ideal.

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ - pop station names in with a return for the times you want to see what runs when. Also tells you cheapest ticket options.
  • Hi,

why not try to find a cheap b&b, you would only need it Monday/Thursday, might get a deal for 4 nights, and some offer an evening meal.

Hopefully you will pass your driving test soon.

How far is it, 20 miles or so? That would take less than 2 hours on a push bike for the odd 6am start.
