Hi all,
Moving to Central Manchester in 2 months time to start a new job and want to be renting a flat in the city centre for the first year before i find somewhere to buy maybe out in the suburbs.
I am looking at getting a 1 bed flat (studios a little bit small) right in the centre (10 min walk to arndale centre), i have never rented before, only multi bed student places.
Manchester and the surrounding areas are awash with 1 bed/2bed flats and i am thinking i can knock some money off the rent, the question is how much.
I am looking at places on the net at £550 in the right location that look really good. How much would you look to be getting off?
Thanks for any help.
Ben

You should easily be able to get 10% off. This can be increased if you offer to sign a 12-month contract rather than a 6 month - that way they'll have the security of knowing they won't have to deal with any void periods for the next year, so they should be willing to reduce the rent in return for that security.
Also, offering to pay say the first 3 months rent in advance if you've got the spare cash can be a way to knock another £50 or so off the rent.poppy100 -
poppy - thanks for that i was thinking about the 10% mark to get the rent to £500, doubt i will be able to sign on the line for a year because think the mrs may be joining half way through and there wont be enough space.
had not thought about paying up front, i am in the position to be able to that, a good idea.0 -
Hi - I live in the centre of Manchester, currently pay £700 for a large 2-bed unfurnished with shared courtyard, just off Oxford Road.
I know the ones near Piccadilly are slightly cheaper due to location but as the previous reply said - unless you can commit to 12 months I think the chances of them reducing the rent are slim to nil. The city may be awash with flats but not all are in good areas, and there are a lot of owners out there with huge mortgages to cover. No harm in asking though.
Word of warning - please don't use Homes 4 U. Worst city centre letting agency ever! I've also heard very bad things about Julie Twist Properties.
Hunters and Suttons City Living are registered ARLA and might be better.
Good luck and I'd really be interested to know if you got a reduction or not.

wheres the "green quarter" Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

Do you mean Ancoats?
This rebranding of manchester is really fascinating to me, I wonder if any other cities have done the same

Green Quarter is not strictly cheetham hill although it is that side. Its basically directly opposite the MEN carpark on the corner there has the four lanes of traffic one side and the train tracks on the other....the apartments are ok inside but you get a better deal because of location me thinks.
If it was a personal choice I would choose castlefield or northern quarter to live. I know there are quite a few in castlefield around the 550-600 mark but whether you will get a discount on them I am not sure. I don't think there is a shortage of people looking to live city center as one of my friends recently looked.0
