What I would say is the ape might have 'got stuck' at progressing like a human, but it might not have 'got stuck' at progessing by other measures. Animal behaviourists as a rule love to warn against anthropomorphisation but apply it often to their research. An apes pinnacle of success is always going to be being the best ape it can be. A human being the best ape it could be would not be that successful in life.
Its my belief that our 'selves', our species selves , are 'success'' , health and happiness, are met best by applying science to improve conditions while remembering what we are, physiologically and anatomically and considering what impact they might have psychologically. It used to be my belief that by this kind of balance we could best improve welfare of all animals in human control...pets, work, captivity. By extension I think it applies to humans, thoug I begin to wonder if there are stages of domesticity In people too....
E,g. I wonder if its partly why hamish and I will never agree on population density not just from a practicL pov but from a gut level. He's just more evolved than I am.
Oh absolutely. A gorilla is a gorilla as it should be, not a 2-year-old human gone wrong. But if we're talking about the extent to which killing a gorilla is like murdering a human, then the extent to which they're mentally like humans is kind of relevant, I think.PasturesNew wrote: »How odd. I can't imagine!!
News here is that 11+ results have come out. We live in a grammar school county. DS didn't apply - he's better off in a comp (we're in the catchment for an excellent one) because he'll work hard wherever he goes and needs the confidence boost of being in a non-selective school. Oh, and he'd absolutely hate an all boys school. DD is different though. I think the girls' grammar might really suit her, and she's v keen to go there, so we put her in for it, and today we have heard that she's high enough up the rankings to be guaranteed a place if we put it first on our application to the LEA. She is thrilled and I am v proud of her, although I would have preferred to keep my eardrums intact by being a little further away from her when she saw the crucial words in the email.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Feeling a bit unmotivated today. Went for a nice walk though.
The plan for tonight now is to watch Das Boot and have a couple of beersDownfall was on the other night and that kind of made me want to watch Das Boot. Speaking of which I've suggested coffee with the German on Monday; we shall see. I'll keep you all updated of course

Now, as you can guess, Idon't argue against it......but in a different way to the 'fluffy bunnies' brigade and a different way to lots others interested from similar perspective and me. My opinion is we're equal but different. But I would want to feel I could help a gorilla medically if in a position to do so, and scientifically ( e.g. Reproduction or captivity for relocation in times of need etc). Which to a gorilla might feel is ' not on'.0 -

Thank you. I told her you sent huge congratulations. She grinned. Then she said "Ask her when we can meet up." My policy is not to tell her about possible meet ups until they're pretty definite.Do you know anyone who's bereaved?
