Options
Looking to buy a new car, not in a hurry so if it meant waiting and saving a few bob i would do that, also i would not be bothered if it was say a 2014 car that i bought new in Jan 2015...not bothered about it dropping in value as i intend to keep the next one for the long term....any tips or advice i would be grateful for.

How long is long term? Just asking as you often find lease deals for 3/4 years that are cheaper than owning a car and taking depreciation hit.
Some dealers do an incentive for taking out finance, can always check if there is an early repaymnet penalty and if not pay it off straightaway.
If you are intending to keep longterm where it will be out of warranty, don't buy french, and if it was me, id avoid a diesel regardless of mileage, hate the things.
Is there a particular make and model youre interested in? If theres a newer one coming out tou'll get discounts on the old one.0 -
Around Christmas when few buyers are looking for cars and dealers are trying to reach annual targets. The one caveat being it will need to be in stock and these days many manufacturers try to keep excess stocks low.
If you can be fairly relaxed about the exact spec you should be able to get a good deal.0 -
Trade prices are often lowest in November, except for 4x4s. They start to rise in December as dealers stock up for January.
If you're buying new, make sure you check out the brokers - drivethedeal, etc.0 -

Whats the type of car and whats your budget?
We've found that when buying BMW's you can often get a better deal on a brand new one with incentives than an ex demo / 6 month old one.
Conversely we went to buy a golf last year, and a nine month old car could be bought for £12,500 where a new one was around £18,000.
Also, the more expensive the car, the greater the impact of a year or plate change on resale values.0 -
Just looking at the moment, will have aprox £12k....been looking at the Dacia logan as you get a hell of a lot of car for the money ( and that is top spec )0

Just a little over £12,000 will buy you a 9 month - a year old mk7 golf, or a focus for that matter.
Light years ahead of a Dacia Logan0 -

I'm not a fan of the Golf, but I totally agree with this sentiment.
I can see the Dacia's being 'worthless' after the warranty expires on them.... I can see them piling up the BCA yard now and selling for buttons.0 -
Can I butt in with a small tip please?
My eco Focus does t least 50 miles more per tank than my last Focus,

I agree with the above sentiments, if you really must blow £12k on a car, then i too would bide my time until the right bargain comes along, probably in the depths of winter when no one else is looking and i would buy newish used.
Have yourself a shortlist of possible makes and models and just keep perusing the ebay/trader ads, sooner or later a genuine private seller will need to offload their pride and joy, and by keeping the sharks out of the deal you both end up better off.
I'd be very wary of Dacia, Indian built Dusters are rusting like discarded horseshoes (check the Dacia forum for corroboration), and whilst so far Logans appear OK, i have no doubt other results of paring things down to the cheapest possible will rear their heads in due course.
You could pick a very fine nearly new Kia for £12k and still have 5 years warranty left.0
