Help - Fleas

We have 2 cats and 2 dogs (1 large, 1 small) and at the moment we are losing the battle against fleas  . We have always found Doctor Martins to work up until now. So we have recently tried Johnsons. In the last month or so we have spent aprox £100 not including the £200 vets bill we had when one of the dogs had a sort of stroke/episode 2 days after using the Johnsons (vet said probably was a reaction but can't be proved).

We have hoovered and sprayed everywhere, washed and sprayed their beds but they've still got them  .

They seem to be free of them for a few days and then they are back :(

Can anyone please recommend anything?

Thank you

I have never found the over the counter stuff to be any good. Can your vet prescribe something more effective? Activyl is good but all vets have their favourites.

  • You need Advantage or Stronghold for the pets and for the house Indorex or for a really bad infestation I got these http://www.pestcontrolsupplies.co.uk/insecto-flea-destroyer-bomb-150ml-triple-pack.
You also have to wash all the bedding in the house including the pets keep hovering all the time including the matresses and around the skirting boards until the problem goes.
When you get the proper flea treatment make sure you use it as it says.
Unfortunatley you have found out that the cheap flea stuff doesnt work and can be dangerous. Theres loads on the internet about Bob Martins.
Im very surprised that the vet didnt recommend some decent treatment. Also dont get frontline that can be ineffective as well. Good luck.

Hi thanks for the replies I will have a look now at those you have suggested. The vet advertises Effipro do you know if they are any good? They seem to be a lot cheaper on Amazon.

I'm getting a bit obsessive now with the hoovering and spraying. My husband has even emptied the shed and sprayed in there (they have beds in there which have been washed and sprayed).
  • No you dont want that as its the same as Frontline and it doesnt work very well anymore.
If you want your pets to stay flea free theres no way round it you have to get the best products on the market its expensive but worth it.

Hi, I'm just looking online now for Advantage but am getting a lot of different ones coming up (Advantage 100, 250, 400 ect). Do I buy the ones with the highest number?

My husband has just nipped out to the vets to see which ones they would suggest.

I've just seen next doors cat come out of our shed and sit and have a good scratch :eek::(

I have spoken to my neighbour and she say's she does flea him.

It is very difficult to get rid of fleas once you have them.

you do need to hoover thoroughly and spray with a long lasting spray everywhere the dogs and cats go.

All rooms, spray curtains as fleas can brush off onto them.

Any fleas that got on clothes that are then put in wardrobes etc will transfer fleas there.

If the dogs go in the car then hoover/spray the car thoroughly.

Make sure you treat down the sides of cushions and under them if they are removable. Also along the edges of skirting boards.

Eggs can survive for nine months to hatch out later which is why you need a long lasting household spray.

If your cats are picking up fleas outside then they will be bringing fresh fleas into the house.

Clean out your hoover after each use as any eggs hoovered up can hatch out in the bag.

Some people put a flea collar in the hoover bag to kill any fleas hoovered up or that hatch out.
