sky high water bill and usage??

many thanks, have spoken with severn trent today, who have froze my account and are getting someone out to look at it, the fact they've pressure tested my main in the last few weeks may have had a factor to play in it.

Builders are taylor wimpey so I'm going to wait to see the outcome of what S.T.W find and go from there. if they fix it for free, all well and good, if not, ill be forwarding the bill to taylor wimpy.
pressure testing the main is just to make sure that the water is flowing as it should at its fullest, even low pressured mains can have zero leakage on it its just to make sure the new build is getting sufficient enough sustained pressure so that its not going to have draw backs for others in the area, if there was low pressure they would then look at the DMA area and see the stats on the DMA meter to see if the area has increased its normal usuage, if there was low pressure they would simply fit a pump to the area if no leak was evident.

new builds do pose a problem for water companies, they fit the mains in the road, but problems arise after like ferrules and connections coming loose, but because the main is PVCu its hard to find and pin point the leak especially if its a big one as the sound of a big leak through a listening stick or elephants foot is faint, smaller the hole the noisier it gets on pvc mains.

you don't have to wait 18 hours to see if your leaking internally in the home simply:

    1. cease all water use in the house (including turning off your boiler).
    2. go to your main stop tap under the sink and close it fully clock wise.
3.Go to the main stop tap outside, take a flat head screwdriver with you as they can be jammed shut sometimes, and lift the lid, lift the cap on the meter if it has one, and see if the meter is spinning, if the meter is spinning then water is leaking between internal tap and meter outside. if it stops, then go in the house, open the stop tap under the sink leave it 10 mins, then look at the meter again if its spinning and your using no water then the leak is past the internal stop tap deeper in the house.
