I really sympathise with you. i find that hard (really hard) exercise helps me....particularly settling my stomach from that sick feeling and reducing the cramps. When stressed it is hard to concentrate on anything, but try really hard to get into a book, a film or maybe Wimbledon (or any tv)? This gives you a break from the thoughts whirling round your head. Deep, slow breathing can reduce the feelings of panic. A friend of mine cleans out cupboards when stress hits hard.
An approach of only thinking about the here and now can be helpful (although I find it quite difficult to do). Concentrate on the beauty around you right now......birds singing, children laughing, flowers, trees, blue sky, stormy sky whatever you can find beauty in. But take time to notice it and appreciate it. When your mind starts to churn bring it back to what is happening NOW.
Drop your shoulders (they are not meant to be worn as earrings!).
Brace your tummy muscles. Feel how strong you are.
All of these can only be suggestions as we are all different, so different things will work for different people, but I hope something helps.
Best of luck and wishing you well.

I moved house in Feb and it's hugely stressful - I didn't realise how stressed I had got until we went on holiday recently and I relaxed again.

I would definitely talk it through with a doctor. You are having mild panic attacks and you can take beta blockers to stop those. They're not mood-altering drugs like anti-depressants. They don't screw with your brain chemistry. They work physically to reduce the amount of adrenaline your body releases into your system. I used them during my final exams at uni as I had panic attacks. They're weird - your mind is going like mad but your body stays relaxed and your heart rate stays down!

I'm not normally one to recommend unnecessary medicine, but you're having an anxiety response to a specific situation that will be over soon. On that basis, I say use all the help you can. :)

Don't worry OP, my missus is very similar when it comes to dealing with stress (ie - she can't!)

When we sold our house last year I did 99% of the legwork, planning and paperwork that was involved in it. The only part she wanted to involve herself in was house viewings.

When it comes to anything to do with money she has palpitations if I mention anything to do with it and completely blanks me out and will eventually get up and walk out muttering "I don't want to know" a lot....which it has to be said isn't much help. It makes it worse when she says "Just sort it out if we can afford to" and then leaves me to it, then moans at me that she thinks things are too expensive when I sort them out within a reasonable budget!

I recently sat down to plan out how she wanted our garden to look (we're going to landscape it this year) and she was happy to do this till I started working out some figures. She said she didn't want to know and left the room... I'm currently trying to negotiate a good price and think I've just about managed to, but I know if I tell her what it cost she'll complain about it!

I'm guessing 'Pukkadad' looks after all the finances in your house like I do in ours? It's a thankless task in our house I can assure you!

Gosh that sounds stressful gra76 I'm not that bad, I actually deal with all the finances and control them quite tightly, feel this may be part of the trouble, this is now totally out of my control and it panics me
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

I feel your pain as I'm EXACTLY the same.

I also look after all the finances and I'm a control freak about everything (not saying you are, but, well maybe I am a bit :o).

That's exactly what I found stressful about moving - waiting for the mortgage decision. Being in a chain and being dependent on other people, knowing it could fall through at any point before exchange through no fault of our own. For the organisers/controllers of the world (like us!) it's a rubbish process to have to go through!

As I said, if it keeps affecting your physically, it is worth a chat with your GP as there are drugs that can help you get through it. You know there's an end in sight.
  • Take a nice deep breath, close your eyes, focus really hard and visualise yourself as a pair of curtains......... I don't have to do the rest do I ?

Seriously, do get yourself checked out by the Dr & not Dr Google, just to set your mind at rest.
Providing you are healthy, what's the worst thing that could happen, that you don't get your mortgage ???? There's an old Scots saying "whats for ya wil nae go by ya " it's a mortgage, a house, a boat load of debt...... it's not the end of the world as we know it.

Back to the curtains....... Pull yourself together. :-)
