I've been told you can withdraw sterling money from ATM's in marmaris no probs, everybody does it over on trip advisor and most people do it on holiday there and change for free into local currency, obviously these are in the know. a bit weird that some say you can't LOL.

Supermarkets don't charge as sterling technically is worth more to them anyways than the lira, go figure!

    thanks anyways.

Well, there are (a few) ATMs in this country that dispense EUR and USD cash, so there's no reason why you wouldn't find ATMs dispensing GBP outside the UK. A quick look at other internet forums suggests that they do exist in Turkey. I don't think I have ever seen an ATM that dispenses GBP in a country that doesn't use GBP (except possibly at ferry/Eurotunnel terminals in France, which I think is technically British territory anyway), although I've never been to Turkey.

However, for optimum money saving and convenience you should get a fee-free card like Halifax Clarity and withdraw local currency cash, making sure that the card is charged in local currency.

Thanks, Funny how some of the forum members on here don't know that you can withdraw sterling from a cashpoint abroad, LOL

Obviously they don't know what they are talking about which I'm surprised at from experienced members.

To be honest I think a debit card is far easier, IMO.

I think the only time I have withdrawn Sterling from an ATM outside of the UK was in Jersey. The annoying thing was that even though I was a HSBC customer using a HSBC debit card in a HSBC cash machine with no foreign exchange I was still charged a 2% fee.

Hi, I believe all ATM's abroad allow you to take sterling euro's and local currency.

I think you may be very wrong in saying that you cannot take out sterling from ATM's abroad.

I've never seen an American ATM giving out anything except US $$'s.

probably because this situation is extremely unusual!!

I have travelled quite a lot and have never seen anywhere where you can get Sterling from a cashpoint. US dollars and euros where they are used unofficially as currency in addition to the local currency maybe...

Hi, All I was confirming was wether I can withdraw english money abroad from an ATM. I've simply been told No you cannot. you can only withdraw local currency from a cashpoint and never english sterling. I though I could from what was said, so that's why I sound confused.

Shame really as it would be a lot easer and then I would only be charged the 2% withdraw fee and avoid the other fee, then chage it to local currecy in a supermarket or somewhere.

Apparantly a lot of people do this (take out sterling cash)abroad and avoid the non sterling fee.

You have an option to withdraw local currency, euros or sterling. so where is the problem? I don't know.

I've not done it before so obviously I'm getting confused or I'm just thick!

    thanks.

Can you take our Euros in ATM machines here? No. Why would you think ATM's in the rest of Europe would carry sterling?

    Edit:
I see you are talking about Turkey specifically, would have been better if you'd have put that in your OP rather than 'abroad'.

Turkey does seem to have a relationship with sterling, perhaps that is why you can do it there, but in Europe, no.

I can't imagine that there are many countries that have GBP-dispensing ATMs and the ability to exchange GBP cash for local currency at very good rates. I suspect that this situation may be unique to Turkey.

I've taken out USD in Cambodia as it operates as a parallel currency to the Riel, and you can use dollars to pay for pretty much everything in urban areas (although small change is likely to be given in Riel). I've never seen anything like it for sterling, but I haven't been to Turkey. If it is indeed possible to withdraw GBP notes from ATMs there then they surely must be making a per-transaction charge, is the same true of withdrawals in Lira? And is the local exchange rate once you've got the notes better than the official rate?
