Traveling alone would I get an aisle seat?

Totally depends on the airline and their check-in procedure.

If they do online check-in with allocated seating then just choose one for yourself. If not then ask at check-in. It's usually not problem.

If it's "sit where you want" then just sit in the first aisle seat you find.

As a BA frequent flier I have an aisle seat specified in my preferences so I automatically get assigned one. The only time I might want a window seat is on a very short flight (less than one hour) and we will be flying over somewhere interesting.

My experience is that unlike cinemas etc airlines seem much less controlled over their rules where people can and cannot sit.

As others have said, what you can and cannot do depends on your airline/ status/ class etc. Generally as soon as check in opens (ie online in most cases) you can log in and pick out of whats left - others may have been able to select earlier based on their status etc.

Of cause on the day if you end up with a different seat you can always ask to switch with someone else. Most tend to like the window rather than the aisle so as long as youre not likely to have a problem unless its someone very long legged or a couple etc that's split across the aisle

There isn't any airline with "sit where you want" policy anymore...

Personally if it really bothered me where I would be sitting I would pay the extra £10 and pre-book my seat. I travel on my own often to England and hate sitting in the middle seats, so I always pay the extra £10 to get the seat I want. Saves me the time thinking about it, and I don't have to be at the airport at a silly time just incase I might get a seat I want.

There's 5 of us travelling to Lanzarote next week and I pre-booked our seats as 2 of us will be sitting with someone else. I've booked the aisle and middle seat as I don't want to annoy the other poor person sitting with us when the wee one wants up for the loo.

I know it won't apply for the OP but just for reference Southwest Airlines still operates open seating on board.
