  • Hi there, I really appreciate all of the responses!

Yes @molerat, in April, this is when it all really started, when Npower decided to credit our account with the £500, and then they turned around and actually decided that we owed them that money instead.

I have had a discussion with my partner this evening and we've just decided that there isn't much we can actually do & that we will pay up and move the hell out of this property, will not be rushing to choose Npower as our supplier any time soon either!

Again thank you so much for your time!!

Of course you can do something. Take start readings and dates, current readings and dates and work out the bill. Check your bank statements for how much you have paid them and work out what you owe. It should not take more than an hour of your time.

Hi there, I live in a rented 2 bedroom flat with my partner and we pay £86 for gas and around £20 for electricity per month.

we received a bill out of the blue the other day telling us that we owed them £600, so I proceeded to ring them asking why. They then made me take a meter reading for both gas and electricity and told me that I actually owed them £1100 as they were only estimating our usage as we hadn't given them a reading in a while.

Is this normal? Is there anything we can do? We have been in the flat for about a year now.

You should be submitting reads at least every 3 months, and not accepting bills with estimated readings. The supplier only has to read every 2 years.
Fail to do this and the inevitable result is a huge catch-up bill. It's not an inherent issue with the property or the supplier.
If you turn off the supply near the meter during shop hours then it will be perfectly obvious if your meter is feeding their circuits.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
