Hi All,

just wanting to get everyone's opinions really on my car situation. i have a 2003 peugeot 307 with about 46000 miles on it. it has been sorn since Dec as i was not working and couldnt afford the tax, mot, insurance. so now im in a better financial situation i was thinking of getting it back on the road again but i dont know if its worth it.
this is the work it needs done :-
new battery
mot - one headlight, rear lights, the brakes are sqeaking but dont know how bad they are
road tax - £110 a month
insurance which is about £70 a month
on auto trader it seems that the value for it is about £800 but i will probably get less if i sold it considering the above things that need to be sorted out and it has a big noticeable scratch on the front bumper from a 2010 accident.
so now i dont know if i should just sell it for about £500 or fix it because i work in the city i have to get the bus mon-fri since i cannot drive in so i will only use the car on weekends.

i dont know what to do!!!! please help with some advice :)

Sell it = £500 in your pocket .
Do it up for weekend use you are driving a £800 car that you have probably had to spent £200 on plus your insurance £840 plus £110 road tax plus fuel plus any further repairs or replacement parts like tyres etc .

Dont start spending on it, just get what you can. You could easily spend out more than you thought and not get it back.

It would be different if you were looking to learn whats what about car repairs and intended to use it more than you say.

Then at weekends use taxis, friends or other transport.

New battery and a couple of bulbs - pretty good that!!! Batteries can be picked up dirt cheap now.

Whack it through an MOT test then make the decision.

Depends how much it's worth to you personally though

I would stick it in for the MOT regardless to be honest. It always looks better showing a failure sheet saying "just needs pads" etc rather than selling it with no MOT where there could be multiple things wrong that you are hiding from the buyer.

You won't get anywhere near £500 without an MOT.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

Get rid of it, buy something for more money with possibly much worse faults.....
I despair of this consumerist attitude, I really do.

A battery is £50, a few light bulbs under a tenner.... Brakes, discs+pads all round probably £150.

It's done 46k miles for Christ sake, it's practically a new car.

My Vectra had 65k on when I bought it 6 years ago, it's now got 120k on the clock, never failed an MOT and just had a new cambelt (2nd cambelt since I bought it).

My thoughts exactly. Battery and bulbs are a simple job to DIY, buy from a local motor factor rather than Halfords, far cheaper.

Brake discs / pads - if you've done a bit of DIY on cars, then again they are a relatively simple job with the help of a Haynes manual, but as Strider says, not a huge amount of money even if you get a garage to do it.

For a couple of hundred quid you've got a "young" ( in terms of mileage ) car that should last you many years. It's a no brainer.
  • Not a very desirable car to try and sell. To me its a keeper till it no longer go's.

the braking system I.E pads and discs are pretty cheap for the 307.

bulbs are cheap as chips in a good motor factors, (don't bother with the likes Halfords, motor world, and spares world) for bulbs.

its been sat for a reasonable amount of time, so check the condition of your tires, and give it a good blasting up a dual carriage way to blow out the exhaust system cobwebs.

trickle charge the battery overnight to see if its dead-dead or just lost charge running the clock whilst been sat.

thanks so much for the input everyone! the car was brand new when my mum bought it in 2004 and she only did about 30k miles on it and i have contributed the rest since 2010 so it has a lot of sentimental value its practically priceless.
i think the best thing to do will be to take it for MOT as advised, assess the damage to my pocket and hopefully it'll be cheaper.

would you recommend taking it to a local garage or one of the major one i.e halfords, kwikfit? i usually go to kwik fit for MOT

council run MOT station. they don't do repair so not likely to fail you for profit margins.

leave halfords kwick fit alone, you only have to read the abundance of complaints on here to realize their just money pit places that wish to bleed you dry of your cash even if the parts are not a failure or defective.
