New phone for T mobile contract

Hi I have a phone on my T mobile contract. Have had the contract 13 months but have to have it 18 months to get an upgrade.
My phone is a Motorola V3
I would like another phone - can I just buy any - even if its a cheapy one, as the V3 is not working great.
Can I just put my sim card in another?

as long as its t-mobile or unlocked it shouldnt be a problem.
try to avoid orange unlocked phones though as they riddle the phones with their own software0 -
well there is a cheapy t mobile pay as you go phone in woolworths, so will this be ok?0
